It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Eleanor Jorden yesterday morning, Wednesday, February 18, 2009. She was living in the home of her daughter, Telly, and her son-in-law. Her son Temple lived in the vicinity and had been able to see her often...

What sad news. Just the other day I was wondering how she was doing. She was truly a pioneer in the teaching of Japanese, especially in her insistence on presenting the students with natural language spoken at normal speed, something that much of the profession still hasn't caught up with. Back when I was teaching, I used "Reading Japanese" as the primary kanji textbook, because despite its age, its pedagogical approach is unequaled.

As a member of the first FALCON class, I still remember Eleanor Jorden's sense of humor and interactive approach to presenting grammar. I took FALCON after graduating from college and in preparation for going to graduate school in linguistics, and it was she who suggested that I apply to Yale, something that I had never even considered.

Thank you for posting this regrettable news, Bob. I'm surprised that the papers haven't picked it up.

Sukle-sensee,

I'm so sorry to hear this. My condolences for the loss of your friend and mentor. Just by reading your post here, I can tell that Jorden-sensee lived a very full life. Every FALCON student is proof of her legacy, as are you. I'm thinking of the FALCON ohana (かぞく)often. Best wishes for the rest of Spring semester.
