We've had a great 2009 which will end with well over 50 shows. As much credit as we can take for helping bring artists together for all of these great performances, in the end its YOU - the people who showed up, opened, spread the word, made flyers, etc - who made them succeed by getting involved. What better way to close out 2009 than a giant "THANK YOU!" show featuring 10 hours of quality music featuring some of your favorites from 2009 as well as new faces geared to win you over and make you go crazy.
Presale tickets will be available later this week at Angry Mom Records, The Haunt, and www.ithacaunderground.com.
10 hours for $5? Sound to good to be true? What's the catch? The catch is, we want YOU to help. This is a great opportunity to really put Ithaca on the map as an epicenter for underground music and all ages show. Together, we can make this by far the biggest one yet. Bring your friends. Bring your siblings. Hell, bring people you barely know! There are still plenty of people in this city who have never had the experience of an Ithaca Underground show - this is the perfect chance to show them what they've been missing. This is our call to you and we know you're up to the challenge. let's sell out The Haunt. Think I'm crazy? So do I. But we can totally do this.
This will be our last show of 2009 so be there or get cabin fever for a month.
LEMURIA (Asian Man Records)
http://www.lemuriapop.com
This power trio is one of the finest acts in upstate NY, reminiscent of bands Superchunk, The Weakerthans, Jawbreaker, and Discount. We're honored to have a band of this caliber that still holds dear the DIY ethics that we support and promote headline BIG DAY IN. After self-releasing several EPs and 7" on drummer Alex Kern's own Art of the Underground label, the uber DIY Asian Man Records (Lawrence Arms, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Bomb The Music Industry, etc) scooped them up, issuing "The First Collection" then releasing the band's latest LP, "Get Better" which received a solid four-star review from Punknews.org:
"With Get Better, Lemuria channel the best moments of mid-`90s alternative[...] and perhaps unintentionally pay homage to bands like Rainer Maria and Discount. Intentional or not, it sounds awesome and ought to be a welcome addition to the library of any fan of those bands. The vocal harmonies are earnest and catchy. The guitar work creates palpable tension with crunches and mutes in the appropriate places. And hot damn, "Pants" is such a great opening track.
The band's biggest strength sonically are their dual vocalists, Sheena Ozzella and Alexander Kerns. Their styles reside on opposite ends of the spectrum -- Ozzella's higher, cheerful delivery directly contrasts Kerns's subdued, monotone voice. Even with that said, they sound great when they share vocal duties, such as on the fantastic "Yesterday's Lunch" and "Hawaiian T-Shirt," with a superb one-line chorus ("But every funny guy has a serious side") that really showcases the point I'm attempting to drive home.
There's absolutely no reason whatsoever this band can't be huge. They've crafted a sound that can be enjoyed not only by discriminating, snooty bloggers such as myself, but by people whose listening habits include rocking out (or doing whatever it is they do) to bands like Paramore (don't let that reference deter you from checking out this band and record). Seriously. Mass appeal, yo. Get Better is totally sweet. Not sweet as in awesome, even though it is awesome -- I'm talkin' sweet in the old-fashioned way. Lemuria have created one of the best albums of this young year, and easily the best debut full-length in 2008 thus far." - review by Bryne, Punknews.org staff member.
I OBJECT (Blacknoise Recording/Alternative Tentacles)
http://www.myspace.com/iobject
Fast, pissed-off, female-fronted hardcore from upstate New York! I really can’t expressed how extatic we are to have these fine people involved with BIG DAY IN. I Object embody the D.I.Y. lifestyle, pressing several of their own releases and booking multiple U.S. and international tours on their own. Get ready to tear up the pit to ripping, sub-two minute songs with socio-political urgency. These vegan straightedge punks craft catchy – but not poppy – hardcore tunes that put their message first, covering a broad range of topics like lifestyle, healthcare, prison reform, abortion, and more without getting preachy or at the expense of the music. Oh, and they ONLY play all ages shows. We can so get behind that.
SAKES ALIVE!! (Cavity Records)
http://www.myspace.com/sakesalive
These dudes are on fire! Fresh off the release of "Act II" with the third and final 7" of the series coming soon plus a hot spot on this year's FEST 8 in Gainesville, FL, we couldn't be happier to have these punks back in Ithaca. They first felt the power of the Ithacan underground back at the start of this year at the first "last Saturday" gig way back in January to 109 sweaty, circle pitting, screaming Ithacans. Needless to say we've been on their map since.
"Sakes Alive!! is the unabashed punk rock troupe from Rochester, NY. Punk rock that is screaming and writhing; melodious and indignant. The type of band that reminds you as to why you got into punk rock in the first place. They craft loaded stories of malice, directed toward the failed machinations of the world around us. Starting from everyday trials and tribulations, which then scale upwards to "divine" plan and blanketing deceit. Music that is the gnashing teeth of discontent, yet celebratory for a life and world bent on reclaiming." - http://www.sakesalive.org
STATIC RADIO NJ (Black Numbers/Chunksaah Records)
http://www.myspace.com/staticradio
JUST ADDED!! That's right, after almost a year since their fantastic performance for the last (and one of the best) IU show of '08, Static Radio NJ are back! The band is on their way back from FEST 8 and recently released "An Evening Of Bad Decisions" on limited vinyl.
In 2002 Static Radio started inconspicuously enough: four friends who grew up going to shows and listening to all types of music got together, wrote some songs, and played any show they could get their hands on. Initially, the band reflected much of what had drawn them into punk: simple, aggressive guitars, angry vocals, and speeding drums. As a relatively young band, they cut their teeth on the New Jersey scene the hard way; painstaking trial and error, and above all an unrelenting energy and desire for experiences. Over the years these experiences seeped themselves into the way the band crafted their songs; although they never strayed from hardcore punk their material began to take on additional elements, nuances reflective of their years as a band. Somewhere along the way, two things happened; someone on the opposite side of the country unleashed their legal team upon the band in order to protect the image of their bar-band/ puppet-show/God-knows-what (at which point Static Radio became Static Radio NJ) and more importantly, the band somehow decided that the progression and growth of the band would become the member’s main priority. Static Radio NJ don't plan on stopping anytime soon because they simply love what they are doing and couldn't imagine doing anything else but playing to anybody that wants to listen. - Chunksaah Records
AFICIONADO
www.myspace.com/aficionado
In the beginning, the bands' vision was pretty straight forward and aggressive. With influences like indie rock innovators At The Drive-In and underground punk gods Refused, Aficionado took towards a harder edge. However, during the first couple years, most members got pretty heavy into 70's era progressive rock, drawing a great deal of influence from bands such as Yes, Kansas, and King Crimson; who demonstrated that instrumentation and song structure can be out-of-the-ordinary, and songs can be musically complex, but the music can still listenable and enjoyable. With these influences in mind, the band headed in a more progressive direction. People tend to like when you can give something a label, so i guess you could call it "progressive-indie".
Without taking away from the intensity of the music, Aficionado began incorporating unconventional instrumentation such as flutes, horns, & mandolin into the songs. These instruments were added to compliment the already epic, over-the-top nature of the band's sound. Also backing up their big sound , was a theatrical and energetic live performance, something the band has prided itself on from the very beginning. Live performances set out to make every member of an audience feel included in the show. No standing with arms folded, looking bored here!
4 POINT O:
http://www.myspace.com/4point0ny
This eight-piece ska band has been lighting Ithaca ablaze with two stellar performances this summer. Since we last saw them they released a full length - "The College Try" as well as playing SKALLOWEEN in Syracuse with The Toasters, plus they'll play with Pietasters later in Nov. One of the most diverse ska acts I've seen in a very long time - circle pit inducing punk jams, skankin' good verses, poppy choruses to full on guttural screams and heaviness. Sounds like it would get jumbled but it works oh so well.
Why The Wires (Habit Forming Records):
http://www.myspace.com/whythewires
Punkrockwaltzstompshout! These IU favorites continue to pick up speed as after a summer tour, release of their hotly anticipated (and super sweet looking) full length debut LP, "Lost Lighthouses." They’re a five piece incorporating guitar, bass, violin, acordian, sax, drums and more. Check out their tracks for best description! BIG DAY IN will be a fine feather in their superb 2009 cap having also performed with A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Mountains, Daniel Francis Doyle, Upsilon Acrus, Microwaves, Dark Inside The Sun, Snip Das!, and Autumn in Halifax. Don't miss this first Haunt show from Why The Wires! Ex-Idatel, Horns, Grey in Between, Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death.
Brown Sugar (Feral Kid Records):
http://www.myspace.com/brownsugar2012
Fast hardcore band from Western NY. Their singer originally hails from brazil. Very passionate, old-sounding hardcore punk with a modern edge to it. Take a listen, let it speak for itself. Features a current member of I Object.
Ailments (Delinquent Records/Punks Not Profits):
"Tom Jonesin'" Album Release show!
http://www.myspace.com/ailmentslive
Fast making a name for themselves after a successful tour last spring plus their involvement in the DIY scene in Ithaca and Olean, the Tyler and Noah (ex-Aura) duo have been hard at work readying two releases by the end of the year. "Tom Jonesin'" on Dilinquent Records will have its Ithaca release at BIG DAY IN with their debut on Punks Not Profits to follow later in the month or early 2010. These dudes pump out a chard blend of punk, grind, and stoner a deafening whirlwind. You won't know what hit you. First Ithaca show with their new bassist!
The Debunks
http://www.myspace.com/thedebunks
One of the bands that helped IU get back on its feet in 2008 and helped kick 2009 off in a big way as part of the 109 attendee first "last Saturday" show back in Jan. Bringing a youthful vigor to a blend of punk, rock, and early ska; we've missed these boys since our last show with them at the 4 Point 0/Skip Town Matty ska show back in June and are ready to skank along! Their guitarist/vocalist Ian Price is also a member of The Plebes and assisted with vocal duties on The Rolemodels opening set for the Red Scare Tour with Cobra Skulls, The Menzingers, and The Sidekicks over the summer. The other fine folks you’ll recognize from their IU involvement are Nick Geisler, Matt Tucci, and Josh Simpson.
Speak Daggers (Ithaca, NY)
http://www.myspace.com/speakdaggersspeak
The moniker might be new but the faces should be quite familiar. With the hiatus of The Rolemodels and needing something louder and faster than their Fight A Scary Dog folk project, Corey Fox Mahany (guitar, also of Ballistic Shit Circus and Genital Holograms) and Ari Kaputkin (bass) joined forces with Peter Pillardy (Ballicstic Shit Circus, Makeshift) on drums for a power trio of fast punk awesomeness with some sneaky elements of noise. Look for more from these fine three in 2010.
Radio The Ape:
http://www.myspace.com/radiotheape
Radio The Ape is a group of friends who decided to get together and write some music. They generally play easygoing rock based dance music, but occasionally unleash the beast and saturate their songs with overdrive and catchy bass/guitar riffs. Art Sullivan: lead guitar, bass and back-up vocals. They are: Trevor Scheer: drums, guitar, and back-up vocals. Matt Ploss: lead vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards and Drums. Jacob Kotler: guitar, bass, synthesizer.
Akaria
http://www.myspace.com/akariaisnotasgood astheythinktheyare
Formerly known as The Reputables, this four piece hailing from Lansing, NY blends elements of punk, metal, and rock and features Stevie Cardone on vocals and rhythm guitar, Parker Callister on lead guitar and vocals, Aidan Quest on bass, and rounded out by Conor Stanhope behind the kit.
