JASS at Women Redefining Democracy: The participants at the conference included activists, policymakers, journalists and communicators, and four Nobel women Laureates. The agenda consisted of panels and small group discussions where participants shared experiences, strategies, and lessons in order to learn from one another and propose new forms of democracy and alternative strategies for achieving just societies.

Nobel Laureate Mairead Maguire closes day one of the international conference "Women Redefining Democracy." Participants reflect on the full day of learning and knowledge, and proceed to a lively reception hosted by Nobel Laureate Rigoberta Menchu Tum.


JASS at Women Redefining Democracy: Escalating violence against women in Guatemala, including the recent kidnapping and torture of professor and human rights activist Gladys Monterroso, made the setting of this conference even more meaningful and the topics all the more urgent—and presented an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the Guatemalan issues and use an international presence to provoke interest and action.

JASS Mar de Cambios is a collaborative effort among the Petateras, IFUN, CEASPA, Alas de Mariposa, and JASS Mesoamerica, which will be held in Panama City, July 5-10 and offer diploma accreditation from the University of Panama. Here, 45 women will analyze power in the current context and in women’s movements, to understand and mitigate backlash in these violent times, as well as conflict among activists.
