This summer I'm reading 'The Wind in the Willows' (1909) and there in Mole's fore-court is a fanciful stand 'topped by a large slivered glass ball that reflected everything ...all wrong and had a very pleasing effect." THEY DID EXIST (before the '50s) it seems!
