I'm considering - I think we all felt a bit burned the way the IAJE tumbled, but we need to start again with hopes that JEN might stay pure in its goals.

I would settle for them just staying in business, featuring a variety of artists each year, and not going all crazy on people who forget their nametag in their hotel room. You can't run a business that makes 60% of its income from one event, then hold it in Toronto in the coldest month of the year.

Chris McNulty

Chris McNulty Hi everyone and Happy New Year to you all! I promised Ro I'd to stop by to add a little more detail to an earlier post. This is a thread from a shorter comment posted at the wonderful and gorgeous Judy Neimack's board. I added some detail here. it's at the Discussions Board under the banner "Getting students of vocal... jazz camera-ready for a rigorous under graduate program" - 2nd post. Peace, Blessings, a little more prosperity for the poor and needy and a little less for the riich and greedy and perhaps, if I could be so brash, ask the good lord for a little more work for the hard working, creative artists who contribute tirelessly to the spreading of positive energy around this planet!

One of the most important lessons I have learned over the years is to give up trying to second guess my audience, reviewers, even friends' opinions of my music. Instead I try very hard to live up to my own standards of what I think is beautiful. I know what I love in music and if I work toward that goal with integrity and authenticity, the ... See Moreopinions of others have far less impact. There is no accounting for taste. There will always be those who are critical of what we do. If we are very clear about what our own strengths and weaknesses are, then we can humbly accept that which is true and graciously blow off that which isn't. Sometimes people just don't get where you're coming from because they are listening with expectations instead of hearing what is actually there. Again, the question is: are you doing this because you love doing it, or are you doing it because you want to be loved? If you have worked at your music with genuine love for the art and the gift you have been given, no one can take that away from you. Remember, sometimes reviewers are practicing the "art" of reviewing and are so caught up in the ego of their own writing they fail to maintain the very integrity that is required to produce anything truly artistic.

To deal with the stress of it, you must avoid going over it in your mind...because each time you recall the review, you injure yourself emotionally all over again. The cumulative load of such stress is physically and psychically damaging.
A technique my clients find successful in similar situations is to monitor your thoughts---and when you catch ... See Moreyourself thinking about that review, STOP the thought, and replace it with any thought that makes you feel good. (Have something ready to use at those times.) In this way you actually interrupt the chemical pattern of the thought-stress in your brain, and "re-wire" it for a more neutral feeling.
Try it. It really does work. :-)

Getting the new CD launched, website up, putting together a choir, finding some solo gigs, finding some any other kind of gigs, writing more music, getting out and hearing more music, teaching more students, and singing, singing, singing. Oh yeah, and gaining 30 more pounds.
