James Montgomery Boice The problem is that the evangelical movement in America today is shallow. It speaks of salvation, but it does not grapple with sin. And since it does not grapple with sin, there can be no true repentance.

"This would be confronting and addressing the issue head on would it not?" No, it is not. Grappling is what happens after confronting. A preacher can preach his heart out against sin, but unless the people do something about it and wrest it from the deep recesses of their innermost being no grappling has been done. The emerging church movement and the seeker-sensitive church mentalities are evidence that Boice is correct.

The seeker-sensitive churches and emerging church movement do NOT represent evangelical Christianity. If they do, then they are only a SMALL part of it as there are literally thousands of evangelical churches that are not a part of these movements. Again, Boice made a presumptuous sweeping generalization that I believe should have been retracted.

And, addressing a sin issue within the church is in my estimation "taking hold of it". Symantics perhaps?

James Montgomery Boice Abraham shows that election is not by merit. Isaac shows it it is not by physical strength. Jacob shows that it is not even by inheritance. It is by grace alone, and grace demands accountability.

that quote is from Boice's commentary on the minor prophets and is in reference to Amos 3:2. The section is in regards to us being a chosen people and what Bonnie said is correct. the only thing that could probably be added to her explanation is that we aren't saved to be "lone-ranger Christians," but are called to be accountable to a local church.

Thank you, I appreciate the response from both of you! But I hope I don't bother you too much if I asked you what does church mean according to the scriptures?

We are highly impressed with what we imagine men and women can do, and we want to achieve greatness ourselves. But usually this is mere wishful thinking. Very few of us will be great in the world's terms...

James Montgomery Boice Only after we fail do we become aware that it is God and not ourselves
who is working. God's plan will be accomplished. 'There are many
devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that
shall stand' (Proverbs 19:21).

James Montgomery Boice The Christian way of dealing with fear is to rejoice in the God of salvation...When we try to overcome fear with courage, we are relying on our own inadequate resources. When we rejoice in God, we are placing our confidence in one who acts powerfully and effectively on our behalf.

I try to look at my problems as an opportunity for God to manifest and glorify himself. In doing so, my problems are no problem at all, but challenges to trust God.

Did Luther intend the result, or have the last 500 years (roughly) been an extended unintended consequence? And how does reformation begin? And would reformation today look like reformation then?

James Montgomery Boice A lesson that God can teach us through the failure of our own plans is that He is capable of working for us and in us in spite of us. Only after we fail do we become aware that it is God and not ourselves who is working. God's plan will be accomplished. "Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose... of the Lord that will stand. (Proverbs 19:21)."

James Montgomery Boice "We become fascinated by temptation, like the bird fascinated by the snake that is about to devour it, and we fail to see God's deliverance. Do you do that? If so, you need to get out of the habit. Learn to look for God's deliverance Then your life will go on from strength to strength, and you will realize that God... is your shield against temptation also."

James Montgomery Boice Obviously this site isn't hosted by Dr. Boice. I became a fan of Dr. Boice through PCRT and his Bible commentaries. I set this site up in memory of him over a year ago and will start posting at least once a week from his sermons and commentaries. I would love suggestions from other people on what to do with this fan page.
