Gosh Greg, my first ever policy question in public! ... The Greens opposed the FTA with China because (1) it legitimises the Chinese regime's treatment of its own people, and (2) while it might be good for primary producers it places what little manufacturing capacity we have... at enormous risk and could extend our trade deficit even more.
I am personally (generally) for removing tarriffs and trade barriers to Western markets as the best way to support developing nations. I believe that EU farm subsidies are little short of genocidal toward the developing world. But profits from this FTA are not likely to be distributed to the indentured and child workers of China.
Winston, on the other hand, should have voted for it. For God's sake, he's a Minister of the Crown, regardless of his pretensions to be a member of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition. The hypocracy of that man... "We shall spurn the baubles of high office" my arse. Read More
