Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i Merry Christmas from the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i! We will be closed tomorrow for the holiday... but will be open on Saturday. Don't forget about our FREE kadomatsu lecture and demonstration on Sunday!

Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i
In partnership with TEMARI, Center for Asian and Pacific Arts, the Japanese Culture Center of Hawai‘i presents a FREE lecture and demonstration on kadomatsu.
The ritual of placing kadomatsu (gate pine) was carried here by the Issei, our first generation Japanese, many from farming and fishing areas with strong Shinto ...influences. Following World War II and by the 1960s, few Japanese households observed the practice. But in the late 1970s, TEMARI and the late Bud Morrison began to teach kadomatsu. For 23 years, TEMARI taught the Morrison style, a version of an Edo period kadomatsu and made thousands of these guardians.
Now, kadomatsu are sold in big-box retailers and supermarkets and has evolved into a New Year’s good luck talisman welcomed by many members of our diverse community.
On Sunday, December 27, Merle Grybowski, the first chairperson of TEMARI’s Kadomatsu Project, and TEMARI Co-founder and Executive Director, Ann Asakura, will share their experiences from almost a quarter century of working with bamboo and pine. They will share kadomatsu origins, its symbolism, debunk local kadomatsu myths and encourage you to imitate our Issei ancestors: Use what you have… all you need is bamboo and pine.

Sunday, December 27
9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Bamboo and pine displays, known as kadomatsu, are commonly seen at the doorway ...of Japanese and Japanese American homes during the New Year season. The kadomatsu display dates back to the Edo period of Japan. The arrangement is made of pine sprigs, bamboo and sometimes plum blossoms that are tied together with cord. The matsu (pine) symbolizes constancy, vitality and longevity, and the bamboo represents strength and flexibility.
At this hands-on kadomatsu workshop, Temari's Ann Asakura will share the significance of kadomatsu and students will get the opportunity to make their very own kadomatsu.
Cost: $50 Cultural Center & Temari members /$60 non-member (students age 18 years & up).
