The Japanese Guest Houses is a great website! My husband and I got married in Kyoto 4 years ago and I found the website to be very helpful. We had our wedding night at Seryo Ryokan in Ohara and spent the next day wondering through Sanzenin temple which is virtually on the same grounds. It was such a beautiful place (es...pecially in Autumn and Spring). There are also plenty of small stalls which you can wonder through outside the temple which has beautiful souveniers and interesting food. Just wanted to say thank you for helping to make our wedding experience very memorable! We are also heading back to Japan in December and January. Any suggestions for traditional Ryokans in Ehime prefecture Shikoku?Read More

Jeff Aasgaard Read about the wonderful owners of Sawanoya Ryokan in Tokyo. For more details and to make a reservation see http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/db/tokyo/sawanoya.htm

Yoneko, 65, and Isao, 72, Sawa are the owners of Sawanoya, a ryokan (Japanese-style inn) in Tokyo's scenic Yanaka area. It was in 1949 that Yoneko's mother, Yoshi, and her sister, Nami, first opened eight small rooms to traveling salesmen and to groups of children on school trips. ...

thinking of going to kyoto in either end of nov. or dec. going with husband + one 5-yr. old child. need recommendations on ryokans close to train or subway station, close walking distance to sightseeing spots. don't know if we should go for traditional ryokans or ones that are semi-modern. or just go completely western... hotel, what do you think ? just worry about the bath situation in ryokans, with a child. thanks.Read More

JR Kyoto station is not really near many sightseeing spots but you have easy access to the buses and subway so getting to the more interesting places is easy.

With a 5 year old I would suggest a modern ryokan like Matsui Honkan (http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/db/kyoto/matsui.htm) or Shimizu (http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/db/kyoto/shimizu.... Read Morehttp://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/db/kyoto/shimizu.htm). A private bath and decent heating will be important especially if your child is like mine.

I highly recommend staying in a ryokan at least one night while you are in Japan.

There are a lot of ryokans in Kyoto but I would suggest one modern ryokan instead of a traditional ryokan since you have a 2 year old girl. Something like Matsui Honkan http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/db/kyoto/matsui.htm or even Yachiyo in their Shinkan if you want a little more traditional feel but modern convenience. They have a wonderful dining room which over looks their garden.

The changing of Autumn to Winter Season is one of the busiest seasons in the year for Ryokans in Japan (particularly in popular destinations like Kyoto).
The dates that you have mentioned above are around the estimated dates in which Kyoto should see it's most bold red in the changing colors of the leaves. There is also a national holiday in the middle of your dates.

Unfortunately this season becomes fully booked very quickly but this does not mean that there is "No Room"

If you have a JR Rail Pass you might want to stay in Kurashiki and then take the Shinkansen Bullet Train to Kyoto in the morning. Kurashiki has some wonderful ryokans that you can see at http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/db/kurashiki/index.htm

Matt Stein Headed to Sapporo Snow Festival in early February... is there a ryokan, perhaps in Noboribetsu, where they take singles? The ones I looked seemed to indicate 2-person minimum.

The snow festival is super high season in Sapporo and many ryokans have been booked for months. I hate to say this but I would recommend a hotel. You also might want to thing about joining a package tour. The Japanese magazine AB-Road might help.

There are tons of ryokans in Hakone so it is hard to suggest anything. Hakone Fujiya Hotel is a wonderful Meiji style ryokan. It has Western rooms and a nice Meiji feel that you cannot get at other ryokans. See http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/db/hakone/hakonefujiya.htm

Hello, I am visiting Japan for the first time October 27th until November 15th. The first week I will be exploring the "Japanese Alps" ... Nagano, Matsumoto, Kamikochi, Tateyama ... and will be spending the weekend at Sado Shima and after that will be visiting Niigata... and so on...
I would be very interested in visti...ng a sake brewery on Sado Shima (or the Niigata area). Is that possible ? Do I need to make a reservation beforehand ? How do I proceed ? ... . I am staying 2 nights at the Green Village Patio House in Niibo on Sado Island and on the island I will travel by bicycle, or bus, or maybe rental car.
Any information would be very usefull Thanks !

Generally speaking you will not need a reservation to visit a sake brewery but the explanation will be in Japanese. I am not sure of Sado Shima but Nada-ku in Kobe has lots of breweries.
