U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman details some stipulations of the unemployment benefits extension bill passed out of the Senate this week. The bill extends unemployment benefit coverage for 14 weeks, which will be a great help to the over 2,000 New Mexicans who are on track to exhaust their benefits by the end of this year.... The bill also extends the first-time homebuyer assistance program through April of 2010, eliminates the 36 month recapture requirement for military personnel serving overseas, and includes provisions for businesses.

The bill will now go to the House of Representatives for final passage, and then be sent to the president.

Jeff Bingaman Many New Mexicans are struggling in this difficult economy, and have felt the pain of job loss or reduced pay or hours. We are still trying to recover from one of the worst economic downturns in 50 years, but there are signs that our economy is beginning to turn around. I discuss this in my October e-newsletter.

While I like the idea of term limits, I don't think they will ever pass congress. We might be better with a maximum retirement age for both senators and representatives. They can't run for office any more once they turn 65 or 70. Let them learn to live on SS and Medicare like the rest of us.

You don't create jobs by destroying the farmers in central California to protect a supposedly endangered species. You don't create jobs by raising taxes as in the new Health care bill. You don't create jobs by telling car dealerships that they can't operate any more. You talk about creating jobs but everything you do does the opposite. The healthcare bill will bankrupt this nation. Just vote no. The politicians can't even be honest about how much we really owe (undunded liabilities) on Social Security and Medicare. If you insist on voting yes then vote no on the opt out option for each state. We as a nation should either be all in or all out NO OPT OUT OPTION please! My vote would be all out.

In his floor speech on unemployment extension, Senator Jeff Bingaman emphasizes that "unemployment is affecting everyone, regardless of political party or ideology." New Mexico's job market is dismal with little indication of improvement, and the situation is similar in other states across the country. Bingaman is in f...avor of extending unemployment benefits given the current economic circumstances the nation is facing.Read More

Senator-I see that just today you voted YES on S.1776, the bill that earmarks 247 billion dollars to pay off doctors to get them to support Obamacare.
I must send a special bipartisan thanks to your colleagues that voted NO. Especially the brave Democrat senators that had the nerve to go against what Obama and Reid expected of them...to go against what was just plain underhanded and wrong.
Sadly, your fellow NM senator was NOT one of those brave Democrat senators. (big shocker there I know)
So NO THANKS to either one of you two sir.
Why senator are you so hell bent on shoving this wildly unpopular and economically dangerous program down unwilling American throats?... Read More

One way to FUND projects:
Instead of effficiency BANS on light bulbs, cars, buildings,
dishwashers etc
= have efficiency TAX
Why?... Read More
It gives significant government income on reduced sales (currently 2 billion sales per year of light bulbs alone)
while people keep a choice of what they want to buy
Also, efficient products can have less tax than today.

It might sound good to 'ban inefficient products'
But light bulbs, cars, buildings, dishwashers etc that use more energy have performance, appearance,
construction and/or price advantages as shown on http://www.ceolas.net/#cc2x

Jeff Bingaman I joined 13 of my colleagues yesterday in voting to approve the Senate Finance Committee's health insurance reform bill. I believe this bill is a very good start, but we've got more work to do. I will continue working to make this the strongest bill possible, including fighting for a public option and ensuring that the final legislation is affordable.

Jeff Bingaman About 73% of insured individuals are happy with their coverage. So how would health care reform help these folks? You can read why we must improve our health care system, and why it would cost more to not implement reform, on my website.

Recent studies indicate that about 73% of Americans with health insurance are happy with their coverage. I have heard concerns from many of these insured New Mexicans that health care reform would only affect the uninsured, is too expensive, or is unnecessary.
