Jeff Ray

Jeff Ray This Friday (10/23) Jeff Ray is bringing two good friends with him for a rare CD release performance to celebrate his new album "Blue Mara". Nick Salisbury (bass guitar) and Mikkel Beckmen (washboard) recorded on the new CD, and are two of the Midwest's finest musicians - no lie!

If you've seen The Brass Kings or Charl...ie Parr live, then you've probably seen Mikkel Beckmen tear the washboard up - sometimes literally tear it up! Nick Salisbury has also made his way around the state and country playing with a ton of great talents including Mick Sterling, Mary Cutrufelo, GB Leighton, Ashleigh Still, Joe Carey, Nick Hensley, and a million other folks.

'Blue Mara' is a hard-driving acoustic roots and blues CD that has already received critical acclaim from the Minnesota music community. The CD takes Ray’s resonator slide-guitar to a dark playground of early 60’s Chicago-blues and 1920’s pre-war blues and melds the two with the pervasive rhythms of appalachia and the intriguing nature of east-Indian melodies.

BLUE MARA can best be described as 'Upbeat, pulsing, thumb-thumping resonator slide-guitar with equal parts Delta blues and upbeat Ap...palachian rhythms. The music unexpectedly twists from dark blues, to East-Indian melodies, and back again.'

Also performing will be songwriter Jack Torrey.

Jeff Ray In the fall of 2007, Jeff Ray and Nick Salisbury met for the first time... Jeff had a new batch of songs and Nick had a love for the classic sounds of Chess studios and early electrified blues and rock. The two musicians were from seemingly different worlds - Ray from the acoustic slide-guitar world and Salisbury from... the world of Rock and Jazz and all things in-between. Combined, they had a spark of creativity and began crafting a sound that was equal parts Delta Blues, Chicago Blues, Appalachian groove, early Rock and Roll, and east-Indian music. The sound they created at live shows eventually led to what would become Ray's 4th CD release, BLUE MARA.

BLUE MARA takes the resonator slide-guitar to a new musical playground... think early 60's Chicago-blues moves to the 1920's pre-war piedmont era, throw in some appalachian rhythms and you have yourself BLUE MARA. Not to be overshadowed, the sounds of east-Indian melodies pervade the recording throughout - giving BLUE MARA an uncanny sound of undefinable world-influenced blues. The album was recorded in two locations, Jeff Ray's living room using an 8-track reel-to-reel, and at Owl Recording in Minneapolis by Paul Flynn. The live/lo-fi quality gives the album the feel of an old Chess Studios recording.

As if that description is not enough to freak-out even the most open-minded listeners - the album also boasts the handiwork of the finest crop of Minnesota musicians, including: Nick Salisbury on bass guitar (Mick Sterling's Irresistables / Mary Cutrufello / GB Leighton / Ashleigh Still / etc), Mikkel Beckmen on washboard (The Brass Kings / Charlie Parr), Harold Tremblay on harmonica (Cool Disposition / Summit Stunt Pilots), Brianna Lane on harmony vocals, Timmy Z on percussion, Monica Digre on 'cello, Chris Becknell on fiddle (The Poor Nobody's) and Chris Hepola on percussion (also of the Poor Nobody's).

BLUE MARA contains 11 original tracks and one cover song "Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had", written by the late great Muddy Waters. Samples of the album can be heard at www.myspace.com/jeffraymusic

The CD will be available at CD release shows for the low price of $10. CD release shows are scheduled for Mankato (9/11), Rochester (9/19), St. Paul (9/20), Northfield (10/9), and Duluth (10/23). A Minneapolis CD release show will be announced soon. BLUE MARA will also be available on iTunes and at CDbaby.com for online ordering soon. Be sure to check out www.jeffraymusic.com for all of the latest updates and upcoming shows.
