Jefferson Davis You're right Barrett. I intended for slaves to be freed eventually anyway, and Robert E. Lee felt the same way. My overseer was Benjamin Montgomery, a slave of mine who I allowed to run the plantation along with my brother Joseph while I was in Washington, D.C. or away for the war.

I've seen a picture of Fort Sumter right after it was taken by the Confederates that has a line of soldiers standing in front of the first national flag that had just been raised. The interesting part is that about a third of the troops are black. In the first engagement of the War of Northern aggression, blacks fought for the Confederate States of America. Slavery was not, nor would it ever be the issue.

Jefferson Davis As I recall reading in Jefferson Davis:American, he owned over 100 in 1860, and had a very successful plantation in MS. I know he is from Kentucky, but MS is much more important to his political career. His overseer was a slave and Davis did treat his slaves very well. Trust me, I know all about Davis.
