Jefferson-Madison Regional Library Big Read The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society will offer walking tours of the Starr Hill neighborhood, remembered in local history as an important African-American community. On the tour we see homes, businesses, churches and schools which have been part of the life of the neighborhood over time. Rain dates are Sa...turday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28. The tours are free of charge and they last approximately one hour. Tours will leave from the parking lot at Jefferson School on 4th Street NW. For more information, call the Historical Society at 434-296-1492.

An outsider art show featuring acrylic, watercolor, oil and abstract art made by inmates from the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. Works exhibited come from McGuffey Art Classes that are offered to inmates through the Programs Department at the jail. Half of all proceeds will go to Habitat fo...r Humanity. Jefferson-Madison Regional Library Big Read POETRY CONTEST!

Finalists will perform on Monday, March 29 from 6:30-8:30 at Northside Library

Submit a written poem (no more than three minutes long when read out loud) on themes from A Lesson Before Dying such as family, justice or community. At least ten finalists will get the chance to perform in front of an audie...nce and judges including Ebony Walden of Wordsmith Poetry. Forms, with additional information, are available at all branches. Jefferson-Madison Regional Library Big Read GREAT GUMBO! Show off your gumbo making skills at our contest! See rules below.

1. Gumbo is a Cajun soup or stew containing roux and thickened with gumbo file (dried
sassafras leaves). It usually contains a variety of meats and or seafood, okra and other ingredients and seasonings and is generally served over rice.
2. E...ntries must be prepared in advance. Please bring at least one gallon to the McIntire Room of the Central Library by 1:00 on Saturday March 13. The gumbo should be heated and kept warm in transport.
3. Judging will begin at 1:30. The library will provide cups, spoons, and napkins. Public tasting will begin immediately following.
4. The judge’s decision shall be final and binding. The first place winner will be awarded
a $100 gift certificate to purchase kitchen supplies. Second place will receive a $50 gift certificate. Third place will receive a $25 gift certificate.
6. Due to space limitations only the first 20 contestants will be allowed to compete.
