God yearns to have a relationship with you. He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for your sins. Just like any other gift, you can choose to accept it. Accepting God's gift (Jesus dieing on the cross) of salvation will lead you to heaven. However, if you don't accept His free gift, you will go to hell. God wants you to go to heaven, but He doesn't want to force you into loving Him, for that would not be an unconditional love. Instead, He wanted to give you a choice.. just like with other decisions, we have a choice. God gave us the free will to make choices on our own because He loves us.
It's that simple.. really. Not one of us is worthy of God's free gift. Romans 3:23 states that "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." No one is perfect. Even if you've only stolen a piece of gum, that makes you a sinner. Lust is considered adultery because impure thoughts are going through your mind. Sin is everywhere. That's why we need God. With Him in our life, He helps us to overcome our desires to lie, steal, lust, and so on. Sin is still there, but we can pray that God will help to live in a Christ-like manner.
