FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – (NOVEMBER 20, 2009) Mississippi roots rockers George McConnell, Jimbo Mathus, and Shannon McNally have announced a triple bill show for Friday November 27, 2009 at Hal and Mal’s in Jackson, MS.
Guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, and producer George McConnell grew up in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he was influenced by everything musical from Memphis to New Orleans– blues, country, soul and R&B, rockabilly, jazz and even some metal thrown in there. He grew up working on his grandmother’s beer truck delivering delicious Falstaff beer to patrons of juke joints, grocery stores, and pool halls. During this time he was soaking up the sounds the jukeboxes were playing in these different places leading him to the inevitable – becoming a musician.
McConnell helped start the legendary southern rock band Beanland, drank and toured extensively with the Kudzu Kings and other bands up until recently, where he has grabbed the reins and decided to do things his own way. He now leads his own band The Nonchalants and has recently self-released his new record Singles Only, a collection of all original tracks that have been accumulating over the years. These songs show his varied influences and styles of playing while allowing us to take a look inside his life and others’.
Guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and producer Jimbo Mathus grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He first caught the public’s ear in the 1990’s with the hyper-ragtime vaudeville act, The Squirrel Nut Zippers. Since then, he’s released many recordings of his own in a style he describes as Mississippi Music. “Basically,” Mathus says, “I combine the myriad styles of deep roots music in a type of alchemy. Blues, country, gospel and soul all go into the equation equally.”
Mathus, backed by his band, TRI-STATE COALITION, will perform songs from his current compact disc, JIMMY THE KID, internationally released this fall on Oxford-based indie label, Hill Country Records. McNally, based in Holly Springs, Mississippi, will perform soul-country songs from her new self-released CD, COLDWATER, which is receiving critical acclaim around the world. Both COLDWATER and JIMMY THE KID were produced by the late Jim Dickinson.
With these new recordings, McConnell, Mathus, and McNally have each carved their own place within the Mississippi popular music scene. They represent the premier songwriting, performing, and recording talent that Mississippi has to offer in this one-time triple bill showcase.
