@Christine: God help me I can answer this, though like to point out doesn't mean I enjoy it.

The vamipres in "Twilight" are compared to statues. They are dead, stone dead. If you touch them its like touching a statue, very stone like. Some stone (i.e. Granet) when in direct sunlight can sparkle or glitter. Not to a severe extent, but noticable ... See Moreenough (sometimes you may see the roads sparkle if the light hits it right). Thus...they sparkle. Or at least can.

I admit its a weird...weird choice for avoidance of sunlight. If anything they 'd avoid it because its so damn embarassing lol.
