John Calvin

John Calvin Were we to make a trial of subtlety, it would not be difficult to refute the sophistry of Thomas [Aquinas]. (full post is too long for FB. Click link below to read the rest. Requires approx. 41.7 seconds to read)

Were we to make a trial of subtlety, it would not be difficult to refute the sophistry of Thomas. He maintains that the elect are in a manner predestinated to glory on account of their merits, because God predestines to give them the grace by which they merit glory. ...

I didn't know that the Catholics had books made canonical that were considered by the Protestants to not be true scripture. I love reading this discourse, it helps me learn more about history, the Bible and growing stronger in the Lord!

John Calvin By piety I mean that union of reverence and love to God which the knowledge of his benefits inspires. For, until men feel that they owe everything to God, that they are cherished by his paternal care, and that he is the author of all their blessings, so that nought is to be looked for away from him, they wi...ll never...yield up their whole selves to him in truth and sincerity. John Calvin

John Calvin Let every man reflect for himself how hard it is not only to leave all things, but to leave and abjure one's self. And yet this is the training by which Christ initiates his disciples, that is, all the godly. (Inst. 3.18.4) http://bit.ly/JOywz

John Calvin

John Calvin For until [man's] vanity is made perfectly manifest, he is puffed up with infatuated confidence in his own powers, and never can be brought to feel their feebleness so long as he measures them by a standard of his own choice. (Inst. 2.7.6) http://bit.ly/rnb9j

Let them now go and clamour against us as heretics for having withdrawn from their Church, since the only cause of our estrangement is, that they cannot tolerate a pure profession of the truth. I say nothing of their having expelled us by anathemas and curses. The fact is more than sufficient to excuse us, unless they would also make schismatics of the apostles, with whom we have a common cause.

John Calvin If you are celebrating Reformation Day today, do not forget to include prayers of thanksgiving to the sovereign Lord for reawakening in His people the Christian virtue of full submission to the authority of His Word, the Scriptures. -admin.

John Calvin

John Calvin Paul says, that God purchased the Church “with his own blood,” (Acts 20: 28,) and that the Jews crucified the Lord of glory, (1 Cor. 2: 8.) In like manner, John says, that the Word of God was “handled.” God certainly has no blood, suffers not, cannot be touched with hands; [too long, read reast at] http://bit.ly/vd4AY

The critical piece is that Calvinism was not derived from Calvin. It is based in Apostolic teaching, and it emerges in the teaching of Christ himself, not to mention the Law and the Prophets.

John Calvin

John Calvin The sum of the Gospel is, not without good reason, made to consist in repentance and forgiveness of sins; and, therefore, where these two heads are omitted, any discussion concerning faith will be meager and defective, and indeed almost useless. (Inst. 3.3.1) http://bit.ly/2SPF5R

True. "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God" we dont have imaginary sinners we have real sinners thus it is of necessity that repentance and forgiveness of sins be preached, and any that will trully be saved must part with sin.
