John Calvin

John Calvin Mingled vanity and pride appear in this, that when miserable men do seek after God, instead of ascending higher than themselves as they ought to do, they measure him by their own carnal stupidity, and neglecting solid inquiry, fly off to indulge their curiosity in vain speculation. why don't I hear statements like this today, why do we praise the seeking sinner instead of testing him.

John Calvin The knowledge of God, which is set before us in the Scriptures, is designed for the same purpose as that which shines in creation, viz., that we may thereby learn to worship him with perfect integrity of heart and unfeigned obedience, and also to depend entirely on his goodness. Kurt Hayden I don't think there is any evidence that he was ever ordained. I think some historians speculate that he was, while others speculate that he wasn't.

Poloe E. Dockery We are the salt of the world. and the light We are to preserve the word as well as win souls to the cross. Salt irritates! light hurts the eyes and brings discomfort to those living in darkness.Yet we share it in the Love of God. So as the late Dr. Kennedy would say " I rather be sugar than salt so that the whole world will Love me...but God has caused me to be salt because he so Loved the world

John Calvin It is certain that after the fall of our first parent, no knowledge of God without a Mediator was effectual to salvation. Christ speaks not of his own age merely, but embraces all ages, when he says “This is life eternal that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent,” John 17: 3. It is true that both were punished, but the punishment doesn't stop there. Then come Cain, and the line of the "seed of satan" which still walks today.

Rosella, the translation used here is the one by Henry Beveridge. The quote: "It were cold and lifeless to represent God as a momentary Creator, who completed his work once for all, and then left it. Here, especially, we must dissent from the profane, and maintain that the presence of the divine power is conspicuous, not less in the perpetual condition of the world then in its first creation."

Chapter 16 of Book One is the beginning of the three (final) chapters devoted to Providence.

John Calvin Were we to make a trial of subtlety, it would not be difficult to refute the sophistry of Thomas [Aquinas]. (full post is too long for FB. Click link below to read the rest. Requires approx. 41.7 seconds to read)

Were we to make a trial of subtlety, it would not be difficult to refute the sophistry of Thomas. He maintains that the elect are in a manner predestinated to glory on account of their merits, because God predestines to give them the grace by which they merit glory. ...

I didn't know that the Catholics had books made canonical that were considered by the Protestants to not be true scripture. I love reading this discourse, it helps me learn more about history, the Bible and growing stronger in the Lord!

John Calvin By piety I mean that union of reverence and love to God which the knowledge of his benefits inspires. For, until men feel that they owe everything to God, that they are cherished by his paternal care, and that he is the author of all their blessings, so that nought is to be looked for away from him, they wi...ll never...yield up their whole selves to him in truth and sincerity. John Calvin Let every man reflect for himself how hard it is not only to leave all things, but to leave and abjure one's self. And yet this is the training by which Christ initiates his disciples, that is, all the godly. (Inst. 3.18.4) http://bit.ly/JOywz
