Michael Witt On a completely different topic ... John Michael I was wondering if you have ever considering doing a CD compilation of the psalms. I know your love of them and I know you've covered a LOT of them (maybe not all). I think a boxed set of your already existing settings on the psalms would go over really well and cross ...denominational lines very easily.

Echoing Margot's suggestion, it might be possible to get pre-orders for something like this to help with the production costs and fund raising. Just trying some ideas :)

Peace in Christ!

we have considered putting together a box set of the numerous psalms i have put to music, including my chant tones. cds are a very risky business nowadays. but we are considering it as one of the many possible projects.

I probably own most of them already, but I would still buy it! I consider the psalms to be some of your finest music (ok so you didn't have to write the words ... :) )

Bob Campbell

Bob Campbell Dear Brother John Michael...I concur with Lydia Jane Cypher on the insurance coverage of the facility, if there was any insurance. Also, I would assume that there was a re-building budget that was being followed, and if so, why are you running short of budgeted funds, or have you built a building more than the budget w...ould allow. I am a bit confussed and would love to support if I knew some of these answers. Godbless!

Margot Cormier

Margot Cormier Dear John Michael:

In order to help with your fundraising, have you thought of recording a CD consisting of a compilation of Lent and Easter songs that could be preordered on your website. This may be asking for a miracle, but you have alreadly composed beautiful songs that need only be combined on a single album. I for... one would be more than pleased to buy it in advance.

God bless you as well as all the people who have responded to your call. May today be as fruitful as yesterday. From my mouth to God's ears. Amen.

Margot

Lydia Jane Cypher

Lydia Jane Cypher Dear Brother John Michael ... I would like to make a contribution to the project, but first, please explain why this loss was not covered by insurance, and what will be done in the future to protect the community from another catastrophic economic loss such as this.

Sincerely,
Lydia in Phoenix

Good questions. The New Monastery is being built according to the highest fire resistant ratings, and is significantly safer than the old wooden structures. But it costs significantly more!

The Insurance covered way over the cost of the original building, but not quite enough for the new one. We thought we had sufficient funds through private donations to rebuild completely (or I would never have given the go ahead), but there was a miscalculation. Then we faced the normal increases of building any building of this size.

This all happened before the recession, so normal fund raising would have easily covered the difference. Since the recession it is a very different story. All fund raising in the US is down as much as 50%. So, we are having to work very hard through extra ministry events and appeals to make up the difference. ... See More

We hope that you will choose to donate generously. WE really need the help. Thanks.

I realized I didn't entirely answer the second part of your question. The answer is simple. The New Monastery is also covered by Insurance.

Could you please explain the miscalculation a bit more and how that came to be? doesn't a Contractor set a price before building? I certainly can understand the effects of the recession on fundraising. I know of a church where one staff person's position was cut and the other staff did not take any raise in their budget. In a sense, ministry is not... See More about the money, it is ministry that you do because of your calling. The cost difference between what your fire insurance covered on the old Monastery and the cost of the new Monastery must be wide. That with the recession's effects on your fund raising be I imagine a considerable gap. John Michael you may wish to give another update on this. Please know of my support. Finances can take so much time away from doing ministry. John 10:10 +

David Lester Nehemiah 2: 17-20 17Then I said to them, "You see the bad situation we are in, that (W)Jerusalem
is desolate and its gates burned by fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall
of Jerusalem so that we will no longer be a reproach." 18 I
told them how the hand of my God had been favorable to me and also
about the kin...g's words which he had spoken to me. Then they said, "Let
us arise and build." (X)So they put their hands to the good work. 19But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official, and (Y)Geshem the Arab heard it, (Z)they mocked us and despised us and said, "What is this thing you are doing? (AA)Are you rebelling against the king?" 20So I answered them and said to them, "(AB)The God of heaven will give us success; therefore we His servants will arise and build, (AC)but you have no portion, right or memorial in Jerusalem." May the God of Heaven give success as we put our hands to the good work!

John Michael Talbot Today's gospel teaches us of the "widow's mite." It was most appropriate. We are in day one of our Imminent Fire Rebuilding Fund Crises Appeal. Donations are starting to come in. Every little bit helps, and all are precious to God and to the monastic community. If you have not made yours, please prayerfully consider he...lping us with a $10-20 donation. If you can do more, we certainly will not turn it down!!
