If this bill was as good as it should be the members of Congress wouldn't be exempting themselves from it. I say again Mr. Spratt if the healthcare bill is not good enough for you and your family it shouldn't be good enough for your constituents.

Where the House Democrats' bill would expand coverage to an estimated 36 million of the uninsured, the Republican alternative would cover only 3 million, leaving the same proportion of the population uninsured as now. And while it's fair to criticize House Democrats' legislation for not doing enough to control the growth of health costs, the ... Read MoreRepublicans' version does even less and takes some steps in the wrong direction. For example, it would repeal a new entity, created by the stimulus bill, to coordinate comparative effectiveness research. And it would do nothing to address the runaway costs of Medicare; indeed, the bill trumpets the fact that Medicare benefits would be untouched.

Also may i add that while people talk about national debt and want answers . few questions for ya, what about the 700 Billion Bush spent to bail out banks, in October 2008..What about the Iraq war that costs billions of dollars a month, started over Weapons of Mass Distruction..What WMDs...

Conngratulations Mr. Spratt! You KNOW you have our support here on Kings Mtn, St, and all the folks tha support A Place for Hope. On to Healthcare, pundits will be advising nervous Democrats to move to the right. But the biggest threat to Democrats would be failure to deliver real change—including health care reform that takes on the insurance companies, as I understand it, here's where we stand:
The bill is definitely a compromise. But thanks to House progressives, who fought hard to strengthen it, it's much better than the latest version of the Senate bill and delivers some important victories:
The House's public option is national and available on day one. The Senate's public option allows states to "opt-out"—leaving behind some of the folks who need it most.2 We need the public option in every state.
The House bill makes coverage more affordable than the latest available version of the Senate bill does. A family earning $54,000 a year would pay almost $4,000 less for health insurance under the House version.3 We need more affordable coverage for middle-class families.
The House bill covers 7 million more Americans than the latest Senate bill does.4 We need health care for everyone. The House health care bill would expand coverage to 96% of Americans, increase choice with a public health insurance option, end discrimination due to pre-existing conditions or gender, and help reduce the deficit! We must have YOUR vote, please let's show the nation we have a UNITED front on this one! PLEASE PASS THIS BILL, if not, more people will die, as I have witnessed on Blackmon Road due to poor/no healthcare, we don't need to bury another one in that place....... Read More
Thanks for all you do and GOD BLESS!

@ Donna;
So can I not participate in the gov't run healthcare if I don't want to or will I get a fine???? Is Congress going to be exempt from the healthcare plan they are going to place the rest of us under???? No healthcare plan should even be considered if Congress is not going to put themsleves and their families on the same plan they are going to ram down the throats of the rest of us. If it's not good enough for them it shouldn;t be good enough for us.

There is a poll going around Facebook and an overwhelming majority (77%) of over 250,000 votes say they do not want gov't run healthcare. Mr. Spratt and all the other Dems in Congress don't care what the majority of the people in this country want and think. All the Dems want to do is to socialize as much of your and my life as possible. Hopefully the latest elections will wake up the Dems in congress and they will start to listen to their constituents.

The Recovery.gov website shows the truth. Very few jobs have been created/saved in the upstate of SC. $3,821,068.00 dollars of our tax money has been spent and created/saved 8,138 jobs. Do the math and that equals $471,728 dollars per job!!! I want one of those jobs!

Mr Spratt has been in Congress since the early 90's and has been chairman of the budget comittee. The Dem's have had control of Congress since 2006. What has happened to the national debt since? What has happened to the value of the dollar?

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money to spend. We can not afford more gov't growth. We are already taxed with the highest tax burden of any country in the world and still have the high debt of all the rest of the world combined!!! Mr Spratt please study history, no country on earth has ever survived the tax burdens you and the rest of Congress are placing on your constituents.

I am sure that I am going to get a "it's Bush's fault" answer. That seems to be all liberals can come up with....

A very tough time for many still. I'm not sure the Republican opposition understands that we've let the industrial base of the country run down to nothing while covering it all with debt and a bubble in the housing market. They might consider applying some of their conservative values to the problem instead of blaming Obama. A massive change of national direction is called for. Tax cuts won't build new industrial employment or train workers.

Federal Spending on Health Care, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office will lead to astronomical deficits and eat up more and more of the Federal budget if nothing is done to reform the system and control medical costs across the board.

Just a tidbit I read lately....interesting.....
Sixty billion dollars in Medicare fraud is a lot of money, but how can we really put it into perspective? President Obama talks a lot about insurance companies and
their "record profits." Let's compare those numbers.

Fortune 500 tallies show that last year's profits for the ten largest private insurance companies in America were $8 billion--combined. Even the single most profitable insurance company didn't make five percent as much as what Medicare lost to fraud.... Read More

It may be surprising that you could multiply the profits of America's ten largest private insurance companies seven-fold and that Medicare would still have managed to lose more money than they make. But try this one on for size: The Washington Post reports that a high-school dropout in Miami submitted false Medicare claims from her laptop across four years, bilking Medicare out of $105 million. Four of the ten largest private insurance companies failed to make $105 million in combined profits. That's right: A lone criminal grossed more from Medicare fraud than four out of the ten largest private insurance companies collectively netted in profits.

Good FACTS Nancy. Their are many other solutions to solve our healthcare issues without the growth of gov't. Get rid of gov't programs, mandates, and regulations that force insurance companies to spend more and charge more. Open up the markets to choice and flexibility. Not more beauracracy and red tape that will raise rates even higher and force us into a public option because we can no longer afford our own coverage.

John Spratt Economist Mark Zandi declares the stimulus a success.

The federal fiscal stimulus is working. It is no coincidence that the Great Recession has ended just when the stimulus is providing its maximum boost to the economy. The stimulus is doing what it was supposed to: short-circuit the negative cycle of recession and provide a catalyst for recovery.
