John Thune The Wall Street Journal writes about my bill to end TARP: “ ... for Democrats who claim to care about runaway spending, no vote could be easier. TARP has served its purpose, and then some. End it.” Read more.

Democrats are now claiming they really truly are worried about the nation's exploding deficits. Lucky for them, South Dakota Senator John Thune is giving them the perfect chance to prove it.

Politico wrote about my effort to end TARP: “Sen. John Thune is trying to build support to end the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program ...ending the agency’s authority to spend TARP’s unobligated funds-about $200 billion-beyond the scheduled end date of Dec. 31...Thune told POLITICO that he wants to ensure that ...remaining TARP funds ‘don’t get used as a political slush fund and are used actually for a purpose that I think most people in the country would support-and that is to pay down the federal debt.’”Read More

Sen. John Thune is trying to build support to end the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program, a move bound to cause heartburn for Democrats wary of strong anti-bailouts sentiment among voters.

John Thune Apparently the Recovery.gov website cost $18 million to update and still leaves a lot to be desired. It lists dozens of congressional districts that don’t exist. The federal government can’t accurately track and account for stimulus funds, yet some would like us to give the government more control over health care. Not me.

Here's a stimulus success story: In Arizona's 15th congressional district, 30 jobs have been saved or created with just $761,420 in federal stimulus spending. At least that's what the Web site set up by the Obama administration to track the $787 billion stimulus says.

John Thune The important thing for Congress to do in passing health care reform legislation is to get it right: lower costs and improve access. The Democratic Leadership’s bill will instead result in massive spending, new taxes and higher insurance premiums. Real reform would lower costs without increasing government control of health care. Please join the fight for real reform by signing my petition.

Congress must get it right when it comes to health care reform. We need lower costs and improved access. The House bill that passed on Saturday, November 7th by the narrow margin of 220-215, as well as the bill being pushed by the Democratic leadership in the Senate, will instead result in massive...

I gathered 30 of my colleague’s signatures on my letter to all members of the U.S. Senate urging them to oppose any amendments to the health bill that would limit the existing tax deduction for charitable donations. A reduction in charitable giving would have a particularly harmful impact on not-for-profit hospitals an...d other charity health care organizations. A limitation of the charitable tax donation has no place in any health care reform proposal. Read more.Read More

John Thune As Sen. Reid and the Democrats continue to meet in secret behind closed doors, they are considering a proposal to increase the Medicare payroll tax to finance health care. Given the current state of the economy, this payroll tax will slow the creation of jobs and the growth of the economy. Read more.

John Thune Keloland News reported on the health care round table that I held yesterday. I was with Gov. Mike Rounds discussing the massive burden the House health bill would put on the states. The Federal mandates that come from a government run health care plan will make it nearly impossible for states to balance their budgets. Read more.

John Thune What is special about Veterans Day is that it is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who have served honorably in the military during wartime or peacetime. So to all our Veterans and service members, thank you not only for your service, but also for the sacrifices you and your families make in order to serve our nation and protect our freedom.

In The Wall Street Journal, Betsy McCaughey discusses some important passages in the House's 2,000-page legislation that will affect medical care and health coverage. Notably, the bill would eviscerate Medicare and impose a one size fit all insurance model.

In their score of the House health care bill, CBO said the government-run plan would have higher premiums than the private plans. Senator Lieberman (I-CN) said, "Amazingly nobody has talked about it. The Congressional Budget Office said on Thursday when the House Democrats put out their health care reform plan with a p...ublic option in it that the public plan would end up charging higher premiums than the average premiums charged by the commercial health insurance companies. Now why would we want to do that?" Support real reform. Sign the petition.Read More

The White House appears to have overstated the number of jobs saved or created by its wasteful economic stimulus spending bill. One business reported creating 9 jobs with a contract for less than $900 due to confusion over the government form. Apparently thousands of pay raises were counted as jobs created. A Florida u...niversity reported 483 jobs created, then later said the real number was between 18 and 30. Read more.Read More

John Thune The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says a family of four with income of $78k would pay avg of $8,800 in premiums and $5k in co-pays under the House Democrats’ health bill. That’s 18% of family income. We need reform to LOWER costs, not increase them.

As the House moved toward climactic votes on legislation to remake the health care system, the Congressional Budget Office said Monday that middle-income families might be required to pay 15 percent to 18 percent of their income on insurance premiums and co-payments under the proposal.

John Thune I tried to offer my Government Ownership Exit Plan amendment that would end TARP to the unemployment benefits extension today, but the Democrat Majority wouldn’t allow it to be considered. A proposal to fund the unemployment insurance extension with unspent stimulus funds was also ignored.

In a few moments, the Senate will hold a procedural vote setting the stage for final passage of legislation extending unemployment insurance benefits. Leading up to the vote, Republicans are taking every opportunity to blast the Democrats for not allowing votes on all of their amendments.
