About Us: At the crossroads of Route 66 and Lincoln Highway, you'll find the Joliet Area Historical Museum (JAHM), where you'll be delighted with an interactive journey through time.

• Live the myth of Route 66, the "Mother Road."
• Explore award-winning permanent galleries, filled with hands-on interactive exhibits.
• Enjoy traveling exhibitions from and private collections and premiere museums.
• Visit the Resource and Discovery Room, created especially for children.
• In the War Heroes Gallery, look into the faces of people who have defended the U.S.

Soon, you will be able to visit our newest two-story exhibit, "The Soaring Achievements of John C. Houbolt." This state-of-the-art exhibit will focus on the 1969 moon landing, and includes a walk-in lunar landing simulator.
 

Special Exhibits, Current: Abraham Lincoln - The Civil War and Will County
The exhibit, on display through June 21, features Lincoln memorabilia, including a November 1860 issue of the Chicago Tribune proclaiming Lincoln as the new President and an April 1865 issue of the New York Herald that reports Lincoln’s assassination. The exhibit also gives visitors a look at artifacts from the Will County 100th Illinois Infantry, a volunteer regiment that fought in the Civil War, including an Enfield 1853 Rifled Musket that was used in battle. Viewers will see items from the Bartleson Post #6 of the Grand Army of the Republic, including the charter, ceremonial sword, and the original Civil War-era Bartleson drum.

Lord I Tried: A Tribute to Rev. Isaac Singleton
Through March 30, JAHM will display an exhibit honoring Rev. Isaac Singleton. The exhibit features photographs from his work as a civil rights leader and pastor.
 

Special Exhibits, Upcoming: BUS-eum: German POWs Held in Midwest Camps During WWII
Monday, March 9, 2009 • ONE DAY ONLY •
4 – 7: 00 p.m.
Did you know during WWII more than 370,000 German POWs were held in U.S Army operated camps across the United States – many in the Midwest? TRACES’ BUS-eum tells their story using narrative panels and films. This exhibit, co-sponsored by Joliet Public Library and JAHM, will be open for viewing at the Joliet Public Library Black Road Branch, 3395 Black Road.
 

Special Events: Barbie – Fifty Fabulous Years
Sunday, March 29, 2009
Bring your favorite Barbie doll and help us celebrate Barbie's 50th anniversary in style. All ages are invited to this spring luncheon at the Museum . First, enjoy a lecture by Dr. Dennis Cremin, Assistant Professor of History and Director of the Lewis University History Center. Then, head outside for an architectural walking tour with Barb Newberg, Planner II with the City of Joliet and Secretary of the Joliet Historic Preservation Committee, and Kim Shehorn, the Mu...seum’s Education Director. Walking tour includes the Joliet Public Library, the only public structure in Joliet designed by Daniel Burnham, where Kim Neidermyer, the library’s community outreach director, will give us a tour of this historic structure. Plan to have French-themed buffet lunch on your own in the Renaissance Center’s atrium. This program is free for members and $5 for non-members. Dress for the weather.Read More

Tour the Museum’s “haunted galleries” in this popular program to meet some famous and not-so-famous people that once called Joliet prisons their home. Meet Charles Shader, the last person hanged in Will County; the Touhy gang—rivals of the infamous Al Capone; and Helen Gillis, the wife of George “Baby Face” Nelson. The...n, take the Haunted School Bus to the Joliet Prison to view the new Old Joliet Prison Park. Here, you’ll spend ten to twenty—minutes, not years—discovering the prison’s past, inmate history, and discover what famous films/television shows have been filmed there. Stay alert for spooky surprises! Back at the Museum, visit our Caterpillar Auditorium, where Joliet’s Haunted Trails will be spinning their prize wheel—you can also complete free crafts and activities. Those attending this program are invited to wear costumes and enjoy refreshments at the end of the ghost trail. Scary fun for ages 8 to adult. The cost of this program is $8 per person; bring a canned good or non-perishable food item for donation to our local food pantry and receive a $1.00 discount on your admission.
