While I was waiting at the airport for someone a couple of days ago, I see Marilyn Manson of all people come through the arrivals gate. He's hand in hand with a pretty young woman. A bunch of fans stop him for autographs...

I have to say I hate when celebs complain about their fame. It's not like they didn't know what they were going into when they chose the business. Maybe there were a few, like Michael Jackson, that didn't know but for the most part this is what they wanted.

Cool story.

Just because you're smart doesn't mean you're right ______________________ The more you talk about yourself, the less people listen ______________________ If you ever start thinking a little too highly of yourself, write for five minutes with your wrong hand. It's a nice instant-humbler...

At the neighborhood butcher they have a new feature-- free postcards of meat. On one wall near the front counter is a large selection of postcards with photos of different cuts-- steak, roast, chops, etcetera...

A woman is walking down the street talking loudly to herself, gesturing dramatically, shaking her head. I'm sitting at an outdoor restaurant watching. My first thought-- uh oh-- here comes a nut. Then I see a man walking a few feet behind her. He's looking at the back of her head very intently...

The Lonely Shoe Lying on the Road by Muriel Spark One sad shoe that someone has probably flung out of a car or truck. Why only one?...

The Effort by Billy Collins Would anyone care to join me in flicking a few pebbles in the direction...

I was listening to a lecture by Ken Wilbur about consciousness. He mentioned something I had never thought about. Yet as soon as I heard it, my mind jumped on its horse and rode off in all sorts of interesting directions...

Great!

I saw JS'c blog and it tickled something in the far regions of my brain... then I found it (on Wikipedia, of course!)It is from a story called "Gertrude the Governess" -- "Lord Ronald said nothing; he flung himself from the room, flung himself upon his horse and rode madly off in all directions."

On my Twitter account (jscarroll) I get lots of feedback from people who either do or don't like my comments and the links I post there. Most of their remarks are either nice or entirely reasonable, but there's one guy in particular who has begun to fascinate me...

Perhaps he is a reflection of all that is random in the universe.
Michael at 4:26pm June 26
I think trying to figure out "why" he sent it will take you down the unfulfilling path of "because". There's no revelation to be found there. I don't think the universe rewards those who look for meaning in the reason. Just find the meaning what's being shown to you. That'll be enough.

The art gallery up the street that you thought would fail as soon as you saw the kind of things they were displaying. It lasted a year but now there are signs in the window saying it's closing and everything is half price. The objects on display are awful and garish...

Meditation on the Word Need by Linda Rodriguez The problem with words of emotion is how easily meaning drains...

For those of you who use TWITTER, I just received this. If you're game, cut and paste it on: " If anyone is on Twitter, set your location to Tehran and your time zone to GMT +3.30. Security forces are hunting for bloggers using location/timezone searches...

Jonathan Carroll Facebook doesn't seem to be keeping up here with the daily blogs I'm writing. If you're interested, keep checking www.jonathancarroll.com

I always do :)

Jonathan Carroll For those of you who use TWITTER, I just received this. If you're game, cut and paste it on: " If anyone is on Twitter, set your location to Tehran and your time zone to GMT +3.30. Security forces are hunting for bloggers using location/timezone searches. The more people at this location, the more of a logjam it creates for forces trying to shut Iranians' access to the internet down. Cut & paste & pass it on."

A friend just had a baby, Watching her look at the infant, I realized something I knew but had never registered before-- there is a very special expression that women with infants (in particular) get on their faces when looking at their babies...

Annual by Robyn Sarah The yearbooks are out today, with the ink barely dry on their gleaming pages, the faint puke-smell of the new bindings...

Walking towards me is a spectacular looking young woman on crutches. It's plain she's in a great deal of pain. Her face twitches, tightens, then relaxes with every step she takes. I find myself staring at her more because I never think of beautiful people in great pain...

Better than the goddess that crashes to earth by picking her nose! My highschool crush was effectively over when I saw her one day at the bus stop 'digging for gold'...

Awesome to see Blog posts right here!
I've seen that - someone special every way, extraordinarily handsome with gorgeous soul, who's body was scrambled by wicked plot of circumstances. Someone I admire faithfully, who above the disadvantages of "different life" is spreading hope and joy around. Very humble and so inspiring!

The new issue of CONJUNCTIONS magazine is an interesting one. They asked me to write a story for it and the wonderful Powell's Book Store in Portland ran a week long blog about the issue...

Carefully watch the look on peoples' faces one moment after they say goodbye to each other. That first look "alone" tells you a lot about the dynamic of their relationship...

In the subway station the old nun is sitting by herself on a bench. She's smiling like a sunbeam and it's hard not to smile too once you see her. When she sees me looking, she gestures me over with a quick urgent wave of her hand. I walk nearer and she points to what she's holding on her lap...

'The Uncanny Valley' is a concept developed by the Japanese robot scientist Masahiro Mori. It concerns the design of humanoid robots. Mori’s theory is relatively simple. We tend to reject robots that look too much like people...

One of many good reasons not to eat family members: Laughing Death Laughing Death, more commonly known as Kuru, was exclusive to the tribal Fore people of New Guinea...

This is the same thing that caused mad cow disease. What an odd way God has for stopping species from eating themselves. And, if someone comes down with mad cow disease, could it be that he didn't get it from eating beef, but actually consumed his neighbor?

a reader's response to an article in the GUARDIAN newspaper: Paustovsky has a wonderful story of seeing a whole heap of drafts on the desk of his friend Isaac Babel, the minimalist short-story writer, and thinking: good heavens, Babel's writing a novel! But he wasn't...

ON German TV there was a short documentary about the man who invented the silhouette figures on traffic lights: The little walking man on the green "GO!" light, the standing still man on a red "STOP!" light...

The old woman recently lost her husband. That's what the waitress tells me. I used to see them together in the cafe around four in the afternoon. Both of them handsome, well dressed, obviously happy in each other's company...

Last night I was reminded again of the great, long lasting power of books and it was a very heartening experience. The school where I taught for many years is having its fiftieth anniversary. Lots of gatherings, parties, memories this weekend as the tribe from days past assembled...

Leaving the subway station, I see two men standing nearby. One of them is an old gent with a large bouquet of roses in one hand, digging in his pocket with the other. Finding what he wants, he takes it out and hands it to the other man who I now realize is shabbily dressed...

I've got a new short story entitled "THE STOLEN CHURCH" in the latest CONJUNCTIONS magazine. As you can see from the table of contents and the theme of the issue, there's lots of really interesting writers at work here. http://www.conjunctions.com/justout.htm

Vienna is full of streets large and small named after notable Austrians. The famous mathematician, musician, Social Democrat... Walking by one of the streets this morning I thought okay, I lived a life full of accomplishments, awards, acclaim...
