Over the last years, Jörg Widmann has become one of the most sought-after composers of our time. His compositions have been performed virtually all over the world and he has received commissions by the most important international organizations such as Carnegie Hall and the Vienna Philharmonic.
Born in Munich in 1973, Widmann studied clarinet with Charles Neidich at Juillard School, New York and composition with various composers of worldwide acclaim. At the age of 29, Widmann has been appointed professor for clarinet at the Musikhochschule Freiburg.
His compositional output covers all genres from solo pieces to full-length operas. Chamber genres form an important part of his oeuvre and his five string quartets have been performed hundreds of times. Recently, the Leiziger Streichquartet has presented the first complete recording of Widmann's quartets at label mdg and six other ensembles are constantly touring with these works.
Dubai has recently become a second hometown for Jörg Widmann. The Siemens Arts Program sent him there to explore the booming town and its sound. He lived and worked there a couple of months and is returning from time to time.
The growing metropolis has inspired him during the work at his next major project, an opera for the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Moreover, 'Dubairische Tänze', a Bavarian-Arabian experiment will be premiered in Berlin's Konzerthaus in May 2008, and Widmann is composing an oboe concerto for Heinz Holliger and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and a Flute concerto for Joshua Smith and the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra.
