emine Ms. Alvarez,
Congratulations on your win of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Award. I have been an admirer of your work for a long time. I especially loved In the Time of the Butterflies, but Yo!, Saving the World, and In the Name of Salome as well. I wrote a paper entitled "The Problem of Umbrella Terms and the Cate...gorization of American Minority/Ethnic Literature" for my Major American Writers class, and my focus was you. Thanks for your amazing contributions to the American canon!!

Julia Alvarez One of the best parts of the award was to come home to my Middlebury College community and feel their pride and enthusiasm for the achievement. The college has been a long time supporter of my work, beginning with my undergraduate years when I first embraced my calling as a writer. It was here where I learned my craf...t, and years later, came back to teach it to a new generation of students.

Julia Alvarez is enjoying *Big Ol' Moon* by the Blushin' Roulettes, sent to me by my webster from her hometown of Caspar, California.

The Blushin’ Roulettes hail from Mendocino county, California. This folksy twang gang delivers old-timey tunes with a modern twist deeply rooted in feminine perspective. Songwriter/guitarist Angela Rose belts her sweet and sultry tunes of damsels in their bliss and di...stress in a warbling vibrato often compared to Iris Dement and Dolly Parton. Kate Stone holds down the low end plucking and bowing her cello and adding smooth vocal harmonies. Add to this the tasty guitar licks of the legendary Buddy Stubbs (who has shared the stage with Neil Young and the Byrds), the chugga lugga rhythms of not-so-little-drummer boy Jubal Stedman, and the soulful touch of Luke Stone (brother to Kate) on them ticklish ivories and you have the sound that engineer Calvin Turnbull (Old School Studios) captured on the Roulettes debut March Sketch. Originally intended as a demo for Angela and Kate to peddle on their spring 2006 tour of the northeastern US, this collection of 10 mostly live tracks earned the Roulettes enough love to convince them to re-release “March Sketch” as their official debut. Their next release, Took to the Country (scheduled for summer 2009) reflects the growth of the band with Cas Sochacki on lap steel, jawharp, and salty baritone duets and highlights the swanky harmonies of special guest star Gwyn Moreland (of Foxglove.) The Roulettes are part of a blossoming west coast crop of bands you could call “California Country” -- from Humboldt bluegrass boys the Bucky Walters to Gwyn Moreland’s dark country ballads to rugged rags of the Kerosene Kondors. This small town scene of shared backdrop (and band members) makes for a cross-pollination that has heavily inspired the Roulettes to twang and bang and shake their thangs.

Siobhan McIlhoney Mrs. Alvarez, you spoke at my school (Kingswood-Oxford) last week, and discussed In The Time Of The Butterflies. When I read it over the summer, I could not put it down. Dede, Patria, Minerva and Mate came alive through your pages; I could almost feel their presence in my room! Thank you for all of your wisdom, inspir...ation and also for your time; I truly apperciate it!

I have always admired you as a writer and as a person. I met you yrs ago at a book reading you did in Washington DC, I drove from SC just to meet you and gave you a letter I wrote you and that night you wrote me a letter from your Washington hotel. I still have that letter tucked away in my safe, you are my favorite writer, God bless!
