The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. was founded in 1924, the 72nd Junior League to join the Association of Junior Leagues International.
The Junior League of San Antonio has over 1,400 members. Approximately 400 are classified as Active Members currently participating in community projects and fundraising efforts. Approximately 100 New Members spend a year training to be effective volunteers and valuable members of the Junior League of San Antonio. Over 800 of these women are Sustaining members who have given many years of service to the Junior League of San Antonio. Sustaining members no longer must complete placement and fundraising requirements but continue to provide moral, financial and informational support to the Active and New Members of the League. Many of these women continue their commitment to community service in the San Antonio community and across the country.
The Junior League of San Antonio supports over 35 other non-profit agencies annually by offering volunteers and necessary funding. Our "New Member Works" and "San Antonio Works" projects provide a volunteer force of over 125 women that assist agencies such as the Children's Shelter, Ronald McDonald House and the San Antonio Food Bank with short-term (done-in-a-day) projects. The Junior League of San Antonio also works with children at Girls, Inc., The Guadalupe Cultural Center, the SAMM Shelter, Roy Maas' Youth Alternatives and the San Antonio Botanical Center providing educational and enrichment activities for children of all ages throughout the year. Other community projects include reaching out to residents in local nursing homes, sponsoring the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and supporting the Walk San Antonio Program to improve the health of Bexar County residents.
The Junior League of San Antonio has also launched a Literacy San Antonio campaign as our signature project. The JLSA acts as the unifying agent for the community by ADVOCATING for literacy programs, raising AWARENESS about the breadth of the problem, and taking ACTION and urging others to do so.
The Junior League of San Antonio hosted the Rummage Sale fundraiser and community service project for 84 years. This sale was a training ground for volunteers, raised substantial funds for Junior League of San Antonio community programs, and provided a necessary service to the community by offering affordable clothing and other necessities for San Antonio families. TIn 2008, the League transitioned the Rummage Sale to a partnership with Goodwill. This partnership will allow the community aspect of the Rummage Sale to continue for years to come. For 15 years, the Junior League of San Antonio's Olé Marketplace fundraiser has provided a unique shopping opportunity that has resulted in thousands of dollars flowing back into our community.
This fundraiser also provides training opportunities for our volunteers and provides the funding for the Junior League of San Antonio's signature project. Over the years, Junior League of San Antonio members have contributed thousands of hours of volunteer service to the community every year.
