A record 17 million American households, or 14.6% of the country, had difficulty putting enough food on the table at times last year, the government reported on Monday.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the number of hungry people rose this year to 1.02 billion people, as a result of the global economic crisis, high food and fuel prices, drought and conflict. Today begins the 3-day United Nations summit on world food security.
