Lisbon (WTNH) - School kids in Lisbon thought they had a great recycling idea -- feed leftover cafeteria scraps to pigs. It seemed like a good idea until the USDA found out and put a stop to it.

KIDS Consortium welcomes the Alternative Education Association of Maine to Facebook. KIDS Consortium founder Marvin Rosenblum will speak at AEA of Maine's Fall 2009 conference at the Augusta Civic Center on November 13. Stay tuned for details.

KIDS Consortium The Green Schools mini-grant application deadline was August 31. It's a competitive field of 64 applicants, and the decision-making process is underway. The service-learning students at Lisbon Central School in Lisbon, CT, carefully evaluate each application according to a rubric developed by KIDS Consortium--and have fun learning, too.

A celebration of the work of KIDS Consortium will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 5:30 p.m. at the Salt Institute Gallery, 561 Congress Street in Portland. The event will feature a special award for Downeast Energy & Building Supply for their generous support of the annual KIDS Consortium Student Summit. Communit...y Partnership Awards will also be presented to Healthy Acadia of Bar Harbor, ME and Wheelabrator Technologies, Inc. of Lisbon, CT for their collaboration with students on service-learning projects.
Based in Auburn, Maine, KIDS (Kids Involved Doing Service-Learning) Consortium helps transform classrooms and communities through an award-winning educational model that has touched more than a quarter-million students across New England and New York. The mission of KIDS Consortium is to prepare young people to be active and responsible citizens by training and supporting educators, community organizations, and youth in best practices for service-learning. Through service-learning, K-12 students identify, research and address real community challenges, using knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.
The celebration will feature live music by Cahoots, food, cash bar, a raffle (win gift certificates valued up to $500, ski tickets and more), and a brief program highlighting the achievements of the KIDS organization and the award winners. Duke Albanese, Co-Executive Director of the Great Schools Partnership and former Maine Education Commissioner, will speak about the role of authentic community engagement in 21st century schools.

They have been active partners with students and teachers on service-learning projects ranging from bike safety trails to school gardens to nutrition.
Wheelabrator Technologies, Inc., is a leader in the conversion of waste to energy. Their Lisbon, CT facility has provided substantial financial and professional support for authentic student projects and learning over the past decade, including the installation of solar panels at Lisbon Central School, trail projects and student-led efforts to reduce waste and increase recycling at their school.
