From Larry Blood:
Paul Vieregge was the production director in KUSP's early years at the Monterey Jazz Festival as well as being an original founder with Jimmy Lyons, and his vision continued after he retired. He was a staunch supporter of jazz and a great friend of KUSP who fully understood what we were trying to do... both at the festival and in our regular broadcasts. Interviews we had with him at the festival gave us insight into the festival and the music unavailable from anyone else. He was the founder of the Big Sur Jazz Festival, and it was through his invitation that we were able to share with our listeners all but the first year of the festival. Paul had a very warm and very big heart which was open to embrace all who shared his love of artistry and truth in general, and jazz in particular. He will be sorely missed.
Paul Vieregge, stage manager emeritus for the Monterey Jazz Festival, passed away peacefully in his sleep early on the morning of Monday, March 30, 2009, following a long battle with cancer. He was 86.
