American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City As the year comes to a close, we encourage our Facebook fans, and everyone across the metro, to make a New Year’s commitment to be better prepared for emergencies. Check your smoke alarms once a month, make a disaster preparedness kit, take a CPR class, or enroll a loved one in a learn-to-swim course. We all know that ...life is full of the unexpected, let’s do what we can to be prepared. Check our website www.kcredcross.org for tips and help. From our Red Cross family to your family, may 2010 be your best year yet!

American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City The Disaster Action Team braved the incredibly bad weather to respond to five fires over the long holiday weekend. They made sure a total of 10 adults and two children had a place to stay and food. Now, family services case workers will look to hear from each family this week to see what other assistance we can provide them.

Almitra Buzan I just got word that our mobile meals for the homeless program tonight has been cancelled due to the weather. We have to put volunteer safety first. However, the volunteers will be out again next Friday passing out meals, and they'll give the gifts out that day too!

American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City Remember to put safety first at home, and while driving in severe winter weather. Check out our safety tips which include what to do if you get stuck in your car.

Put together a separate disaster supplies kit for the trunk of each car used by members of your household. You should also bring a thermos of warm broth if you are on the road during a winter storm. If ...

Great tips!! And when placing smoke detectors on each level of your home, don't forget your basement and/or attic...even if unfinished. An electrical fire can cause insulation and wiring to smolder slowly before igniting to a full-blown fire. A smoke detector there just might be the difference between getting out and not.

Almitra Buzan Happy Holidays Red Crossers! I know some of you will probably be
responding to fires all Christmas weekend, and the Mobile Meals for the
Homeless volunteers will be out Christmas night providing a special
dinner and gifts to the homeless. Know that you're in a lot of peoples'
thoughts and prayers -- including mine!

Almitra Buzan I'm so impressed w/ our family services caseworkers. I was visiting with Belva, the casework manager, when a call came in from a family in a recent fire. Belva, took the time to talk, not only about Red Cross services, but about life in general. She told the client to call 24/7, even if she just needed to talk. That ma...de me think about what many people don't know about the Red Cross. Yes, we offer financial assistance and services, but we also offer hugs, a listening ear, care and concern.
