Kantorei We'll sing Eskil Hemberg's "Thou Who Art Over Us" at our Nov. 22 Audience Appreciation Event. The Star Tribune has said Kantorei's "crystalline sound" offers "a deeply felt version of a simple but moving hymn." http://www.startribune.com/entertainment/music/44298652.html?page=1&c=y

Kantorei Another choir conducted by Axel Theimer is on Facebook! Check out the National Catholic Youth Choir, and share it with high school-aged singers you know.

The National Catholic Youth Choir is a liturgically based choir open to Roman Catholic youth entering 10th-12th grade. The program takes place each summer on the beautiful wooded grounds of Saint John's Abbey and Saint John's University in central Minnesota. Camp includes a multi-state tour, concert performances, CD ...recording and of course fun! What is unique about the National Catholic Youth Choir is its liturgical focus. The singers learn about the Catholic liturgy and how the treasury of sacred music (Gregorian chant, Palestrina, Mozart, Bruckner, Poulenc, Duruflé...) fits in Catholic worship today. The choir also sings contemporary and newly-written music, some of it specially commissioned for the NCYC. The conductor of the choir is internationally renowned choral clinician Dr. Axel Theimer. Fr. Anthony Ruff, OSB, a monk of Saint John’s Abbey, is the founding director of the choir. Read More

Kantorei Last night we learned that Herbert von Karajan angrily stopped a rehearsal of Tosca at the Vienna State Opera after hearing the shepherd boy solo, because twelve-year-old Axel Theimer could not sing an Italian rolled "r" correctly. Needless to say, he sang a perfect "r" the next day and still does so today.

Kantorei Expressive singing is natural! We should never have to "try" to express emotion, unless we are already singing in a way that limits the natural emotion in the voice - then artificial emotion becomes necessary.

Kantorei We are not trying to keep the beat, but the pulse.

Kantorei We are very busy researching and submitting proposals for grants to support our upcoming CD recording project. Any local foundations you suggest we include?

(I'm Jessica Edward's mother so you know why I'm responding to this.) I'd suggest going to a library and getting the reference text which is a guide to all the foundations in the United States...the UM library will have it, I'm sure. First, go to the Minnesota foundation listings. After that do regional listings...some foundations do ND, SD, MN, IA. Go to the listings for those states and skim to see which ones give grants outside the state. Make copies so that they can be studied.

Norwest Foundation, Bush Foundation, Walmart, Target, Bremer, Wells Fargo, (I've had very good luck with them)...if you decide to do a fundraiser, Sam's club may donate the food or paper supplies.

There are family foundations...I'm guessing that the Daytons, Pillsburys, etc. have private foundations...the Nash family has a foundation.... Read More

If you want to get grant money, you need to have some kind of altruistic purpose...if you are diong a CD that you will sell and that is all you will do with the money , you probably won't be funded. If y ou can think of a purpose like doing a couple of songs for the cd with children's choirs from poverty stricken schools to bring arts to deprived children, then you have an emotional pitch to work with.

You probably all know this already, but just in case, I thought I'd share.

Kantorei It makes it much easier to sing when you think ahead to what's coming next. They say you should stay in the present moment, but the moment is not just a single word or a single note, but sentence, a phrase, a thought. When we think about singing individual notes, we've lost the music.

Kantorei Thanks to Missy Anderson for joining us to take some lovely photos at tonight's rehearsal!
