On May 9th, the Chapel Arts unleashes BROKEN, an art exhibit featuring two East Van painters, Ken Foster and Corby Cuff. It’s a classic match-up of an outsider with over 5,000 paintings sold, and a rookie in his first show. This bout could go either way – will Cuff’s formal training and seven years at the art academy b...e any match for Foster, the seasoned veteran?
Cuff: “I got a ghetto-blaster, a mattress, a bike, a gold tooth, and I got a dream.”
Foster: “Cuff better establish his career soon, he can’t ride on his boyish good looks forever and they’re already starting to fade.”
Foster, who moves his works at the street level, is one of East Vancouver’s most collected artists. Cuff has refused to exhibit with Vancouver’s established mainstream galleries; as a result, his career has had little exposure.
Foster’s work is an explosively fast execution of tortured street scenes that speak of urban modern life gone astray. Morphing figures appear robotic or disembodied as they disappear into hazes of industrial smoke. Rapid mechanical mark making is his distinct style.
Cuff uses simple form and bright colour to deliver a playfulness of shape and abstract figures. A flattened picture plane gives a stripped-down primitive appeal that makes his paintings read more like cultural hieroglyphs and less like conventional picture space.
The art will speak for itself on May 9, 2008 at The Chapel Arts, 304 Dunlevy Ave: www.chapelarts.com. The evening will be accompanied with musical performances by Language-Arts and contemporary beats by DJ Timothy Wisdom. From 5-9pm the artists will be in residence and admission is free. After 9pm there will be a $10 cover charge.
NOTE: There is no bank machine at the Chapel - this is a cash-only event.
Parking is very limited - seriously consider the bus!
