BIRDS OF AVALON
GREAT INFLUENCE MACHINE
INFORMATION DELIVERY SERVICE
In a 1906 essay, Ernst Jentsch describes someone to whom something “uncanny” happens to as not “at home” or disoriented. He defines the word as “doubts whether an ap...parently animate being is really alive; or conversely, whether a lifeless object might be, in fact animate." Having spent the better part of the past two years on the road with the likes of The Racontuers, The Flaming Lips, Black Mountain and Ted Leo, BIRDS OF AVALON are no strangers to the sense of unsettlement that accompanies the constant traveler. BIRDS OF AVALON explore this concept of confusion with Uncanny Valley, by layering psychedelic dissonance atop lyrical themes of fugitives in the computer age, underground-dwelling children replaced by doppelgangers, and sensations of unreality.
Raleigh NC’s BIRDS OF AVALON was formed after newly-wed guitarists, Paul Siler (co-owner of famed Raleigh indie hangout, King’s Barcade) and Cheetie Kumar, split from The Cherry Valence to join forces with vocalist, Craig Tilley, and avid 4-tracker, David Mueller. They later enlisted their favorite Chapel Hill drummer and mural artist, Scott Nurkin and quickly made a name for themselves with relentless touring in support of their ’07 debut, Bazaar Bazaar, and last year’s follow-up EP, Outer Upper Inner.
BIRDS OF AVALON wrote and recorded almost two-dozen new songs during a six-month break from touring. In January, they wrapped up a more elaborate record at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium Studio. Following the session, the band found itself back home wanting to write and record additional material instead of getting back on the road as they usually would. After Easter, the famed producer (REM, Wilco, Pavement), generously offer to lend his 3M tape machine and some old used tape, the band borrowed the remaining equipment from friends around town and proceeded to record a second album in their basement-rehearsal space which was transformed within days to a makeshift studio.
Like assembly line workers, the band worked quickly and limited themselves to using only 15 tracks on the 16-track tape machine to try and capture the spontaneous emersion of new material. Cheetie Kumar, a Bronx transplant via India where she lived until she was 8, handled most of the engineering duties before she and Easter mixed the record down from 2” to 1/4” tape.
The band dubbed these recordings Uncanny Valley, after a theory which was introduced by Japanese roboticist, Masahiro Mori, in 1970 to describe the phenomena by which human beings become more unsettled by robots or other human facsimiles in direct proportion to how lifelike they appear. This sense of uncomfortable strangeness can sometimes develop between the creator and what they create - a sudden vertigo that arises as, in this case, a song takes on a life of it’s own. With Uncanny Valley, BIRDS OF AVALON embrace this sensation by capturing new material as it arises, taking advantage of analog limitations in today’s digital recording age.

Hailing from Orlando, FL, Anberlin formed from the ashes of various other area projects, including the Christian punk outfit SaGo...h (Servants After God\'s Own Heart). Led by the soaring vocals of Stephen Christian, the positive-thinking Anberlin also included Joseph Milligan (guitar), Nathan Young (drums), Joey Bruce (guitar), and Deon Rexroat (bass), and presented an alternative pop/rock sound that, while inflected with the earnestness of emo, was closer to the mature stylings of Third Eye Blind. A five-song demo landed Anberlin the attention of the Seattle-based indie label Tooth & Nail, which signed the group in 2002. Blueprints for the Black Market marked the band\'s debut in May 2003, and Anberlin supported the album with shows alongside groups like Fall Out Boy and Story of the Year. Second guitarist Nathan Strayer later joined the lineup, and Anberlin returned in February 2005 with Never Take Friendship Personal. Their third record, Cities, appeared two years later and debuted at number 19 on the Billboard charts; soon after its release, however, Strayer made his exit and was replaced by former Acceptance guitarist Christian McAlhaney. 2008\'s New Surrender saw the retooled band joining the roster of Universal Republic Records and enlisting the help of Neal Avron, who had formerly produced records for Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard, and New Found Glory. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER
SKELETONWITCH
TOXIC HOLOCAUST
TRAP THEM
The Black Dahlia Murder immediately established themselves at the forefront of the then-burgeoning U.S. metal scene when they released their full-length Metal Blade deb...ut Unhallowed in June 2003. The release of that critically lauded album, however, was only the beginning of an epic journey that would find this Detroit, Michigan, quintet dealing with personnel issues (founding member drummer Cory Grady was replaced by Zach Gibson) and a nonstop touring itinerary that kept them on the road for nearly two years playing with bands as diverse as The Red Chord, Arch Enemy, Napalm Death and Terror. But those experiences ultimately had a profound effect on their latest Metal Blade release, Miasma. \"The road has been what really made Miasma what it is,\" vocalist Trevor Strnad confesses. \"Much of the content here is a direct result of our experience in the band.\"
It is no surprise, then, that Miasma reflects the insanity of life on the road for five guys, barely over the legal drinking age, who were playing an endless string of shows across North America and Europe. \"It\'s quite a bit more personal lyrically, ranging from anthems of cheap sex and drug use to more classic Black Dahlia Murder horror style,\" says Strnad. \"I\'ve tried to reinvent BDM lyrically here. It\'s still dark. It\'s still really evil shit.\"
Strnad’s growth as a lyricist is just one of the ways the band expanded its sound on Miasma. Guitarist Brian Eschbach contributed more to the writing process while his counterpart John Kempainen wrote and played solos for every track. As a result, The Black Dahlia Murder--rounded out by bassist Dave Lock--have created an album that reflects the bonds cemented by the band\'s two-year odyssey. Recorded and co-produced with the band by Scarlet drummer Andreas Magnusson at Planet Red Studio in Richmond, Virginia, Miasma is a deadly reinvention of The Black Dahlia Murder\'s nefariously nasty melodic death metal sound. It is a sound that Kempainen simply describes as \"more pissed off.\" Strnad sees other improvements, as well, however. \"The new songs are much heavier than anything on Unhallowed,\" he declares. \"We were making a conscious effort to challenge ourselves as players and give each song an identity of its own. And the addition of Zach has enabled us as a unit to write more complex and interesting arrangements.\"
