Mountain and Glen

Mountain and Glen
The Yorkshire Three Peaks 12hr Challenge takes place in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, an area of brooding fells, broad green dales and spectacular waterfalls! The park is dominated by the wild peaks of Pen-y-ghent (694m/2276 ft), Whernside (736m/2414ft) and Ingleborough (724m/2375ft).

Raise money for the charity of your choice. We currently have participants raising funds for the Anthony Nolan Trust and Epilepsy Action taking part.

The Challenge is to follow a circular route of around 40 km/25 miles over these three peaks in twelve hours. The start and finish are situated in the picturesque village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale. This popular stopover for long distance walkers on the Pennine Way is located on the B6479, around 6 miles north of Settle and the A65, and has its own station on the Settle to Carlisle Railway.

We meet at 0600 hrs outside the Golden Lion Hotel, Horton-in-Ribblesdale. You will be introduced to your Mountain Leader and given a safety brief and kit check.

Aiming to start around 0700 hrs, you will first head for Pen-Y-Ghent (694m/2276ft), utilising parts of the Pennine Way. This is a fairly steep ascent and can be a shock to the system so early in the morning! From the simmit you will descend before heading over to Ribblehead via the local Mosses which cover the low Dales. A short section of this route follows the B6479 road.

As your second peak comes into view, you will also see the Ribblehead Viaduct, made famous by the opening credits of ITV's "Emmerdale"! The route then follows the Settle to Carlisle railway for a while, before starting the climb to the second summit of the route, Whernside (736m/2414ft).

The route then drops down to Chapel-le-Dale, before the final climb of the day up to Ingleborough (724m/2375ft). From here it's a steady descent back towards Horton in Ribblesdale, where food and refreshments await!

Mountain and Glen
Duration: 3 days

Friday evening - We assemble at your accommodation for a briefing on the weekend's programme and to check kit.

Saturday - A full day's winter skills training high up in the Nevis Range. You'll learn all you need to know including ice axe arrests, crampon techniques, route selection and avalanche awareness. Depending on the weather, this may involve a picturesque Gondola ride onto Aonach Mor! On completion we head back to civilisation and warmth for a debrief and discussion of Sunday's ascent.

Sunday - After breakfast we head to Glen Nevis, from where we begin our ascent of Ben Nevis via the Carn Mor Dearg Arete. This route should give us the best snow and will offer stunning views of the Ben's magnificent north face which has some of the best winter climbing routes in Europe!

Cost - £299 per person.
