The Selvedge Yard captures a group of men who ironically were not mad at all in their design sensibility. While some of them were great architects in their own right, such as Saarinen and Eames, all of them put aside their valiant personal impulses in modernism and worked on a collectivist notion of streamlined, usable design. As peers, Saarinen... Read More, Eames Nelson, Wormley, Bertoia and Risom worked in unison.
Collectivist design movements such as this one created a lot of the usable, streamlined office design environments that exist today. The hallmarks of this movement were clean lines, economic affordability, and intimacy in terms of color, form and texture.
Interestingly, this design movement embraced by KNOLL pre-dates the high-minded white architecture of the International Style, embodied by the great five (Graves, Gwathmey, Eisemann, Meyer and Gehry...), and the same men who integrated classicist vocabulary into post-modernism. And, I would argue, outlasts those two movements.
