it's so sad that someone would do such a thing...this is a crime against each one of us...as citizens this is our National Park. His death is a loss for all of us. My deepest symapthy goes out to the people of the elk project, the park employees and all the volunteers who worked diligently to restore elk to the Smokies.

How selfish!! The elk are there for all to enjoy, not a sports
(man/woman) shooting gallery. Cataloochee is just down the road from where we will retire and I do love the elk so.
Shame on such sick people.

Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park This is SUCH an interesting article about young people's outdoor use patterns. It's chock-full of great stats, and mirrors my own experience of exposure to nature as a child, disconnecting when college & my early career got in the way, and embracing it again as a more settled adult. Glad to know I am somewhat 'normal...', at least statistically speaking! - Holly Scott Burcham, Friends of the Smokies

Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park Per Bob Miller, Management Assistant for Great Smoky Mountains National Park-

"A new 12-hour documentary entitled "The National Parks - America's Best Idea" by Producer Ken Burns, (who produced other programs including "The Civil War", "Baseball" and "Jazz" ) will start this Sunday evening September 27 at 8:00 p.m. East...ern Time on PBS stations across the country.

The series will highlight the movement to create a national park system, the natural and cultural resources they protect, and especially the people, coming from amazingly diverse backgrounds, who helped to create the parks within the NPS. The people and the creation stories are as varied as the parks themselves.

The episodes will run for two hours each evening for six consecutive nights from Sept 27 through Friday October 2. The Smokies has a significant role in the saga. The episode that includes GRSM will air on Thursday, Oct 1 at 8:00 pm.

For those who get East TN Public TV will also be able to see a feature length special produced by E TN Public TV with cooperation from the Park: "East Tennessee Stories: The Land, its People, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park". It starts at 6:00 pm on the first evening, Sunday, Sept. 27. That special will localize the story told in a broader way by Mr. Burns."
