CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
First Virtual Round Table Conference
A virtual conference on “Language Learning with Technology”
12-13 November 2009
About the Virtual Round Table conference
The Virtual Round Table conference is a live online conference dedicated to language learning with technology. It is aimed at educators and lan...guage teaching professionals in language schools, institutes or other language related organisations.
It purposes to introduce to its participants a number of tools and best practise on how to use these tools in class for the benefit of our language learners.
With so many tools around, often the very decision on ‘how to use which tool’ for creating blended learning experiences or for selecting digital teaching and learning material and also for building a web-presence and using tools for online marketing are difficult and time consuming and pales the efforts of learning those tools into insignificance.
During this conference these issues will openly be discussed by small groups of experts in certain fields of technology so that the participants will be equipped with solid information so as to be able to make informed decisions.
Additionally we purpose to hold a number of workshops as we hope that this conference will hold a practical value for everyone attending it and for this watching the recordings long after it.
Presenters are encouraged to keep their presentations concise (pecha kucha style) so as to allow two or three different presentations during each session allowing all to engage in a virtual round table discussion.
We welcome product presentations if these products and services are web-based, electronic, software, digital or other technology driven. May we ask you to tag your presentation clearly as a product presentation?
The conference is free of charge for all participants. If you wish to support this conference as a sponsor, we ask you kindly to contact the conference organisers.

We are looking forward to meeting Henry Emery, co-author of "Aviation English (Macmillan)" for a learning conversation on Friday, the 12th of June 2009.
This learning conversation will take place in a virtual classroom with a maximum of 15 participants and is reserved for language teaching professionals exclusively who ...use the "Aviation English" book in class.
DISCUSSION FORUM
http://virtual-round-table.ning.com/foru m/topics/henry-emery-discussion-forum
HENRY EMERY
Henry Emery is one of the most outstanding contemporary Aviation English experienced professionals and highly-skilled trainers. He works closely with the International Civil Aviation English Association and he is co-director of EmeryRoberts language consultancy (www.emery-roberts.co.uk).
AVIATION ENGLISH
Their excellent book “AVIATION ENGLISH” equipped with one of the most comprehensive teacher’s books is a winner of the ELTon Awards 2009 (British Council Innovation Awards) and meets the language proficiency requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization for use of plain English alongside with RT phraseology by pilots and air traffic controllers.
The Aviation English package provides the all-inclusive solution that is necessary to achieve ICAO Level 4. It is technically accurate on phraseology but the plain-English skills training demanded by today's ICAO legislation is what makes it the first one of its kind and totally distinguishes it from the materials published so far.
What impresses mostly the learner and the teacher is the brilliant choice of aviation topics, the quality of the materials, the easy-to-use plain English in aviation context in combination with the right phraseology.

Max. no of participants Limited seating for the learning conversation but... we do have an overspill room for those who would like to listen in.
Registration http://www.lancelotschool.com/index.php/ services/events/registration
Recording This event is live but will be recorded for those who miss it
Noam Chomsky is the very first author who has been requested by a group of language teachers in the framework of the newly launched Virtual Round Table on Demand program.
And what a better start this could be!
Yet, we are somewhat nervous and the few seats which we would like to fill is a small number compared to the many registrations we received in a mere few days of announcing that he agreed to meeting us for a learning conversation. This is the reason why we did not even put this event up earlier thinking that it was 'sold-out'.
However, we have decided to add an overspill room.
What is an overspill room?
It is almost like sitting in the second row as it were. You will be able to watch the event which is being screen-shared and will be able to hear it and you will be able to chat with your peers. One of our moderators will be in both rooms and will pose some of your questions or comments to Noam. It will be a lot more interactive than just watching talkshow on TV and we will communicate your ideas to Noam Chomsky, however, the only thing you will not be able to do is to directly talk to him.
What about those in the main room?
Those in the main room will actively be able to engage in a learning conversation with Noam Chomsky, discussing the five questions which are being formulated right now on the wiki we set up to collaboratively work on them. http://chomsky.pbwiki.com
If you wish to attend this event sitting 'in the second row', please feel free to sign up.
Some may ask, why do you not simply enlargen the first room?
Well, it is Noam Chomsky's first virtual classroom experience ever and he is already 80 (!) years old. He still lectures at MIT suprisingly but we are not wanting to confront him with too much going on. Therefore the maximum amount of participants for the virtual round table has been set to be 15, which we think is a nice number so that the author himself will get lots out of the conversation (we hope).
If he enjoys this conversation he might agree on meeting us again in the near future.

With language courses increasingly being sold via the Net, traditional notions of how organisations are perceived have gone out of the window. Printed matter and webpage banners are no longer the most effective means of reaching and convincing your audience. Origina...lly it was sufficient to build and optimise a website and wait for clients to come to you. Times have changed. The passive consumer has morphed into a social and sharing beast, relying less on advertising and more on the opinions of others. Via a myraiad of technologies the savvy modern prosumer gleans a deeper and more balanced understanding of any product than publicity can achieve. And from these the ultimate decision is usually made. Find out good and bad points of various technolgies and hot to make them work for you as well as successful examples of implementation in the ELT world and recommendations on how to get started.
Gavin Dudeney is author of 'The Internet & The Language Classroom' (CUP 2000/2007) and co-author of 'How to Teach English with Technology' (Longman 2007). He is Project Director for an online training and development consultancy, the consutlants-e, and in his spare time is Honorary Secretary of IATEFL and an amateur drummer. His current interest is in the use of virtual worlds for teacher training.

This presentation will explore the varying types of materials that are now available to professional English teachers through the Internet. These include blogs, podcasts, infoquests and hot-off-the-press lesson plans that probe the latest issues wiht the immediacy t...hat onyl the Internet can facilitate. Referencing the free resources on Professional English Online, we will consider the advantages and the disadvantages of the Web's dynamic pedagogical content and how it compares to, differs from, and 'ultimately' can be integrated with traditional teaching materials.
Brendan Whightman taught General and Business English in Poland and Italy for seven years before moving into technology-enhanced learning. He is an expert on blended learning and instructional technologies and his experience with e-Learning includes course design and software development for ELT, project managing interactive whiteboard CD-ROMs and teacher training.
