More than 30 years ago, La Casa de las Madres opened San Francisco’s first domestic violence shelter for women and their children. That once-quiet shelter has grown into the city’s leading voice for abused women, their children and teens—educating, promoting awareness and changing the community’s and the media’s perceptions about domestic violence and its victims.
We remain San Francisco’s only domestic violence shelter that accepts victims 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. We provide expert intervention and support services for those we serve, and we never deny anyone who needs us. But we go one step further. Not only do we swiftly respond, but we also serve as vocal community advocates, with an active office, a teen program and a wide range of advocacy programs.
As a professionally-managed, respected, and efficient organization, we are not afraid to speak out boldly on behalf of domestic violence’s victims. We speak, and because we are built on heritage and proven results, our sister agencies, law enforcement and the community at large listen. We change our neighbors’ and also the media’s perceptions about domestic violence—to remove the stigma of being a “victim.”
We work tirelessly to inspire our women to redefine their own lives and the greater community to change the way they think about domestic violence. We are a home for new futures and new perceptions.
