Last night Virgil Dinger, the founder of Crescenta Valley Insurance was honored along with 2 other agency founders. Here is what was read to those in attendance:
Virgil Dinger started selling debit life insurance polices door to door for Liberty National in 1967. He then sold for Great Southern Life for a year. He quic...kly realized that he wanted to be able to offer all lines of insurance to his growing customer base, so in 1965 he signed on with Farmers Insurance and opened an office on Foothill Blvd. in La Crescenta. As he began to cross sell to his clients, he realized that he wanted independence and wanted to be able to represent multiple carriers so, in 1969 he opened Crescenta Valley Insurance. He was appointed first by Kemper and then Safeco. In 1970 Virgil met with the Bruce Norman, the marketing representative from Mercury Insurance and was appointed by them later that year. In 1985, Two of CVI’s main carriers, Sentry Indemnity and Rathbone King and Seeley discontinued writing business in California and approximately 1,000 policies needed to be re-written. Virgil and his partner at the time, Gene Johnson, thought that would be a great time to “invite” their children Rick, Randy and Tracy to enter the insurance industry. They were each paid $5.00 an hour to contact, quote and re-write all of those accounts. Virgil’s daughter Julia also worked in the agency as a service representative for a few years and she is now the executive director of the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce.
