As a recruiter I cannot stress the importance of your advice to a candidate applying for a job Scott, especially via email. With a job market as tight as today candidates should know that although they are simply sending one email to a recruiter, that recruiter is likely receiving dozens of emails regarding the same position.

One of the first ... Read Morethings I do when going through resumes is to see if the candidate followed the directions in the ad, i.e. resume attached, subject line correct, contact info included. If this information was specifically requested in the posting and is not included in the email, I will often set it aside and first focus on candidates that followed the directions.

The second aspect of the email I look at is the spelling and grammar. Article after article states that not running a spell check is the number one way to have your resume immediately passed over. Regardless of the content of your email, it is imperative that you run a spell check and proofread!
