Michigan Family Forum According to an article in the Detroit Free Press, the University of Michigan has announced they have established procedures to accept donated human embryos that will be used in stem cell research.

Voters approved expansion of human embryonic stem cell research in Michigan in 2008 (Proposal 2). The embryos must be those... that are "not needed for reproduction" or be voluntarily donated. Michigan Family Forum opposed Proposal 2 along with dozens of other pro-life organizations across the state.

A Senate committee is currently debating proposed state guidelines for the research, most of which are opposed by U of M researchers and backers of the 2008 proposal. Click the link below to read more.

Michigan Family Forum Michigan Rep. Pam Byrnes (D-Lyndon Township) has introduced legislation to legalize same-sex marriage in Michigan. The three bill package includes a constitutional amendment to repeal Michigan’s marriage protection amendment approved by voters in 2004. The other two bills repeal Michigan’s statutory Defense of Marriage... Act, passed in 1996, and redefine marriage to include same-sex couples.

MFF is monitoring this legislation closely. Although unlikely to pass the full Legislature, the bills may receive a hearing in the House Judiciary Committee, since four members of the committee, including the Chairman, are co-sponsors. To view the bills, click on the link below and enter the bill numbers in the search field: House Joint Resolution (HJR) NN, House Bill 5587 and House Bill 5588.

Here we go again . . . I think that our legislature forgets that they were placed in their roles to REPRESENT the people, not make decisions FOR us. THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN---and yet they want to make their changes anyway! Frustrating . . . PRAY and STAY INVOLVED ---for evil to succeed, good men need only to stand back doing nothing.

At this point, it remains to be seen how the Senate will deal with the issue. Any "final" bill is likely to be a compromise between the House and Senate versions. We'll keep you updated!

Michigan Family Forum Author Lori Borgman recently published a piece in the Sacramento Bee newspaper about fatherlessness and its impact on America. Drawing attention to the unique role that fathers play in the lives of their children, she notes that much of the violence and cultural breakdown in America can be traced to the lack of a fathe...r in the home.

"There is more to being a father than footing the bill," Borgman writes. "Fathers fill critical emotional and psychological spaces in the hearts and lives of children that only fathers can."
