The discussion will feature the following panelists:
Nellis Air Force Base Vice Cmdr. Col. Steve Winklemann of the 99th Air Base Wing

Nick Aquilina, a former Nevada Test Site official
Dr. Michael Green, professor of history, College of Southern Nevada
The military has played a significant role throughout Clark County’s history, dating back to the time when John C. Fremont and the United States Corps of Engineers initially came through Southern Nevada in 1844 and first noted the Las Vegas name. During the 1860s, Camp Callville and Camp Eldorado guarded against non-existent Indian attacks. The Air Service began looking at the county as the site for a training base in the 1930s, a plan realized with the opening of the Army Air Forces Gunnery School in 1941 (but only after the Army was assured that the notorious Block 16 would close). That base, today's Nellis Air Force Base, continues to be an important part of the county's economy. Nearly every branch of the military has had a presence here, from the Navy at Lake Mead to the Coast Guard-manned Loran stations in the southern part of the county.Read More
