Chris...The match that is now recognized as the first official test match was played between Australia and England in Melbourne, March 15th – 19th 1877. Australia won by 45 runs. 100 years later many of the great English and Australian cricket legends descended upon Melbourne to watch the Centenary test match between Australia and England. After a remarkable match Australia beat England by 45 runs – the exact same margin by which they had won the inaugural match 100 years earlier.

Eiulf Peter 'Buster' Nupen. He only ever captained SA once. it was against Percy Chapmans England tour in 1930. He was out of favour with selectors, and was not even playing for his province when he got the call up, he was playing for his club, Old Edwardians. He managed to win the game, and take 11 wickets for 150. He also received 3 stitches in the chin due to a flying edge at slips - not the ideal position for a man with one eye!
