Trash and man-made material is a bridge between the natural wild areas and ourselves, markers that we have been here, leaving bits and pieces of our passing behind. I look for the things that usually go unnoticed, the small things....

Last weekend I paddled on the North Santiam River for the first time. We put in below the massive Big Cliff dam and ran five miles down to Packsaddle County Park. A few hundred yards above the take-out we needed to portage around a 12-foot dam, part of the Minto trap...

Leah.. check out the Dept of Fish and Game site for hatchery info. as they manage hatcheries in CA. Classroom hatchery program is interesting: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/caep/index.html

Although these take a hatchery perspective that is good, we need to restore wild spawning fisheries to our priority list. Also, a magazine by DFG called Outdoor California has a Special Issue titled SALMON CRISIS Volumn 70 No. 4 July August 2009... Check it out for some interesting stories on this crisis. Bill

Thanks Bill! I've just begun working as an outdoor educator in Eugene. I'd love to implement something like the Salmonids in the Classroom in the schools here. I like how the kids really become invested in the fish with this project. It's so important to have them establish connections with the ecosystems in such a tangible way. I'll see if I... See More can get my hands on that magazine too.
You wouldn't by any chance have any information regarding the Klamath situation, would you? I can't help but wonder how the salmon will fare waiting until 2020 for PacifiCorp to remove the dams.

I hope you're doing well!

Hi Leah, I'm doing okay. The Tsi Akim just hosted the 4th annual Calling Back the Salmon ceremomy on the Yuba. It doesn't seem like almost 5 years ago when we gathered for our collective prayer and message to the salmon nation. Great to hear you're helping share knowledge of the natural world!

Good question on the Klamath situation. The ... See Moresooner the better for salmon. In spending a majority of my time working on two FERC relicensing of foothills dams I'm encouraged by court rulings on Klamath, but the process is so political and complex. There is some good talk here on the Yuba about the possible reintroduction of 200 wild chinook above on the north fork...

We just have to keep the voice of Salmon strong and in the front of decision makers and all people on a daily basis.

Amie Hi Leah,

I haven't made it to the exhibit in Eugene yet, but I really like your work. I've been a river rat too and am really appreciative of your water renderings, as well as your rivers-tying-places ideas. Thanks! Oh, you might enjoy this article of freakishly large and abundant Japanese jellyfish: http://www.facebook....com/ext/share.php?sid=116040171964&h=jsbht&u=5q2pq&ref=nf

Jellyfish that can grow up to 6.5 feet wide and weigh 440 pounds are poised to invade Japan. They are Nomura's jellyfish, and scientists and fishers who recall the last major inundation in 2005 are bracing themselves for the next potential wave.
