Practice all changes and transitions until they are invisible. Take 100% responsibility for what you show them. (to read past tips, go the the discussion board)

"I can't believe I have four monologues that I actually like to do. And I am looking FORWARD to going out to audition.....what???!!" —SACHA YANOW, NEW YORK ACTOR
"I am preparing for an audition and your monologue technique is the best and easiest ever—it helps me not be nervous at all and know I am as prepared as I can be."
—GIADA HANSEN, NEW YORK ACTOR
COMPLETE CLASS DESCRIPTION:
You can enjoy monologues!
DIRECT YOUR MONOLOGUES: Having focused, specific staging is the single most effective help for monologue audition nerves. You'll learn to create concrete physical staging for your monologues that is fun to perform, so you'll have something to physically DO in each moment.
ACT YOUR MONOLOGUES: Dynamic, fun techniques help you act spontaneously, boldly and truthfullyin the moment; you will also learn how to fully "act with no one" and how to keep your acting commitment to your monologue under the pressure of an audition.
AUDITION WITH YOUR MONOLOGUES: This part of the workshop is effective for ALL kinds of auditions. Throughout the workshop we address:
- How you enter the room
- How you introduce yourself and your monologue
- How you interact with the auditors
- How you leave the room: how not to 'apologize' or otherwise comment less than positively on your work; but instead, how to have a strong, confident finish to ALL of your auditions
"Before coming into your class, I passionately hated doing monologues. Now, I feel like I have a system – a craft. I feel like I can take control over my life and make performing monologues a fun experience." —JESSE KEARNEY, NEW YORK ACTOR
We look extensively at how to make your overall presentation as confident and professional as possible, and the class culminates in an audition session where you can try out your new monologues and auditioning skills in a safe environment.
WHAT KAREN IS LOOKING FOR IN WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS
- Actors with previous training and experience
- Actors who are truly ready to bust through any frustrations they are having with monologues, and improve their overall audition skills.
- Actors who are willing to put in regular time on an almost-daily basis while the class is in session. (The key to getting the most out of the class is to work in smaller amounts regularly, rather than all in one rehearsal the night before class.)
- Actors who are willing to be on time, prepared, and great rehearsal partners for each other. There is work to do on your own outside of class each week, and work to do with a partner. Meeting once a week with a partner for 60-90 minutes is good, meeting twice is better. The partner should be from the class, though sometimes actors can rehearse with a friend outside the class in a pinch or if they are coming in for the class from out of town.
"I love this work! My body and instincts haven't felt this free to make choices for a long (frustrating) time. THANK YOU!" — ANA VALLE, NEW YORK ACTOR
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
How many people are in the workshop?
There are a maximum of 8 people in each section; everyone works in every class.
How much preparation do I need to do outside of class?
It is essential that you have time to prepare outside of class on your own (a few hours a week) AND time to meet with one other class member at least once a week for 60-90 minutes.
How many monologues will I work on?
You can complete 4 audition-ready monologues during the workshop. The key to being able to bring 4 monologues to audition-ready level is to have enough time to prepare and to run the monologues between classes.
Who takes the workshop?
Actors in the workshop come from a range of experience, including actors who have been auditioning regularly; actors who have just completed training and are preparing to audition; actors returning to the business; actors preparing for grad school, summer stock, agent or casting director auditions. Frequently, actors who have had other training at Atlantic will take the class, but this is not a requirement.
Do I have to have previous experience with monologues?
Most actors who take the workshop do, but it is not a requirement. You should have have some previous actor training before applying, including a solid scene study classes and preferably some voice, speech and movement training. Because monologues and auditioning are so often neglected in many performing arts, college, and conservatory programs, this class fills that crucial gap in actor training.
Do I have to audition for the class?
No. You will emailed an e-application, and have a telephone conversation with Jennifer Tchiakpe once your application has been received.
Are monologues assigned?
The choice of material is completely up to you. If you have any questions about monologue choice for your auditions or for this class, it is highly recommended that you read Karen's newest book How to Choose a Monologue for Any Audition, This book contains everything she knows and firmly believes about the factors that should go into the most effective monologue choices, as well as tools to assess your type, goals, challenges and priorities.
How long should my monologues be?
Monologues should be no longer than 2 minutes (the length most frequently asked for at auditions).
What is the class environment?
The class environment is positive and professional. No one is harshly "critiqued." Rather, we look at an individual's goals for the piece and assess whether the choices are coming across as he/she intended. If not, we look at other ways to accomplish the goals, or to change the goals themselves.
What is expected of me as a student?
Each class of the workshop covers a set amount of material. We move quickly and it is important to be able to come to every class and to keep up with the work. Participants are expected to prepare fully, to be reliable rehearsal partners, and to be attentive to and supportive of each others' work.
Can I audit the class?
Because of the small size of the groups (a maximum of 8) Karen doesn’t allow audits; the class is very participatory and everyone is expected to work in every class.
"Everything I heard about your class was true, and then some. I feel for the first time fully confident when I walk into an audition, and man does that make auditioning a lot more fun."
— JONATHAN LEVY, NEW YORK ACTOR
