The University of Saint Mary fine arts-theatre department presents “Godspell,” the memorable rock musical loosely based on the Gospel of St. Matthew and the parables of Jesus, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, through Saturday, Oct. 10, in Xavier Theatre, 4100 South 4th Street, Leavenworth, Kan.
“Godspell,” which origin...ally debuted in 1971, is one of the most successful off-Broadway and Broadway productions in history and features a host of recognizable songs, including the well-known hit “Day by Day.”
Van Ibsen, director of USM’s theatre program, is directing the student production.
“Audiences should expect energy, enthusiasm, and pure entertainment,” Ibsen said. “The messages of ‘Godspell’ are quite appropriate for a Catholic university, and it’s a nice way to start our theatre season. Audiences will hopefully feel the production forges a real connection between their spiritual life and their enjoyment of popular culture.”
