LeavingLV.net A GREAT video covering the Sands implosion, 13 years ago this morning.

www.youtube.com
The implosion of the Sands Hotel/Casino in Nov. 26, 1996, was a big deal in Vegas, more so than the previous implosions of he Dunes and the Landmark. Here is some as-it-happened Las Vegas TV news coverage of the implosion of the Sands. This is part 3 of 4.

I remember watching this when I was a kid! Nostalgia FTW. It's amazing when you look back and remember how much Vegas has changed over the decades.

Billed as "A Place in the Sun" when it opened on Dec. 15, 1952, the Sands served as a performing venue and playground for the famed members of the "Rat Pack" -- Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop.

I'm in Vegas right now and went by there today. I came out to see the Fontier and Stardust implosion. I can't believe they just stopped on both projects. The implosions were fun to see but what a waste.

I've been in the Horseshoe countless times and stayed at Fremont. I've always wondered what was on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the original building. I understand there is a restaurant upstairs, but never been up there.

Indeed... the gambling ship is a good story I've heard before... Do to the timing of that barge's introduction off SoCal, I'm guessing it was named after a more famous predecessor :) Always a pleasure nerding with you, Joel :)

LeavingLV.net On Thursday, November 5th, "Untold Stories" will take a look at Howard Hughes.
The enigmatic millionaire is best known
for his buying spree of Las Vegas hotels in the mid-1960s. We will
take a look at Hughes not only in that era but an earlier era, when he
used to visit Las Vegas, hang out with locals and drop by the show...rooms
and casinos of the day.
Panelists include:
Geoff Schumacher, author of "Howard Hughes: Power, Paranoia and Palace Intrigue"
Paul Winn, who worked for Hughes and later Summa Corp.
Robert McCaffrey, who knew Hughes in his aviation days
