On Thursday, November 5th, "Untold Stories" will take a look at Howard Hughes.
The enigmatic millionaire is best known
for his buying spree of Las Vegas hotels in the mid-1960s. We will
take a look at Hughes not only in that era but an earlier era, when he
used to visit Las Vegas, hang out with locals and drop by the show...rooms
and casinos of the day.
Panelists include:
Geoff Schumacher, author of "Howard Hughes: Power, Paranoia and Palace Intrigue"
Paul Winn, who worked for Hughes and later Summa Corp.
Robert McCaffrey, who knew Hughes in his aviation days

Two things worth seeing before they're gone: Wayne Newton and the Tropicana! Mr. Las Vegas is performing at the historic Tropicana and
is hinting that this may be his last round of shows before
retirement, while the Tropicana is entering a new era with a big
remodel on it's way which will include the demo/remodel of the p...ool
area and the bungalows, which guests have been staying in even before
the casino was operational! Sneak a peak at old time Las Vegas before
it's gone!

Echelon...surprise! What's Echelon, you ask? That hunk of
metal that's sitting on the lot where Boyd Gaming needlessly and
senselessly tore down the Stardust.

Source: www.lvrj.com
Boyd Gaming Corp. has put the brakes on its $4.8 billion Echelon project for at least three to five years. But the casino operator has an idea of how to spend the money it raised for the Strip development: acquire a large chunk of Station Casinos out of bankruptcy.

3 to 5 years?!? That gaping "hole" in the strip, when combined with the former Frontier site, is a serious downer. Trump, Wynn, Encore, and Palazzo rooms that face that "hole" should have their rates slashed. Riviera, Circus-Circus, and Sahara have it tough being so high up the strip.

LeavingLV.net An archived article from the Las Vegas Sun about the Dunes implosion, 16 years ago today.

Source: www.lasvegassun.com
As thousands of the curious today slowly passed the rubble of what was the Strip’s first high-rise hotel the question arose: What new marvel will take its place, spawned by the fertile imagination of Steve Wynn?

DUNES will always live on in Vegas memories--I well-remember standing outside the Oasis casino mesmerized by the DUNES sign and the brilliant red going up and down....

my grandmother used to work there. She gave me before she passed away 10 troy oz silver bar. Imprinted on it says Dunes Hotel 25th Anniversary .999 pure silver 10 troy oz. The paper in it says
This silver bar was created exclusively for the Dunes Hotel and Country Club for it's 25th Anniversary celebration in 1980. Only 200 were cast.
The Dunes management certifies that this metal is .999 pure silver

The end of the old Dunes hotel on the old Vegas Strip--a favorite spot from my 1990-92 days in Las Vegas. Before, during and after views of the October 27, 1993 North Tower demolition...this is the FIRST Vegas implosion that began the trend toward the megaresorts. ...

I agree with Bob Stoldal when he says it's the sign that embodies the spirit of the place. As the sign is safe and sound in the Boneyard, I say let the rest of the property go. While valiant - the failed attempts at renovating the property for so many years have only exacerbated the decline in that area of Bonanza.

They kicked it high in the longest-running show in Las Vegas history. Now, they're mostly just kicking it. Six months after the final curtain fell on "Folies Bergere" at the Tropicana, only one of its final nine showgirls has another show to show for it.

I think it would be more "respectful" (if that makes any sense) to go ahead and just clear her out. The sign was saved... it would be cool if someone could save the tower too, but... she's done.
