Legal Lad If you're thinking of breaking the law in Britain (not that you should...) consider doing so in Birmingham. Apparently, Britain's most lenient judge presides in the Crown Court there.

A CIRCUIT judge who sits at Birmingham crown court has had 10 of her sentences increased on appeal, placing her top of a list of judges whose decisions have been overturned for excessive leniency.

Correction! I had the right country, but evidently Scotland offers criminals not only the most lenient terms, but the most thoughtful aftercare.

Legal Lad This just in: practicing law is one of the secrets to a long life! (that and "not dying," according to experts).

To all those lawyers on the cusp of retirement, consider this fact. When Jack Borden was 60, he still had at least 40 more years of work in front of him. And now, at 101, the Weatherford, Texas lawyer seems determined to put in a few more. ...

Legal Lad Oh - and I've already an interesting comment from a listener who went to a movie featuring a gory fight scene which the audience dutifully watched, but when a woman's breasts were shown, a family with small children stormed out! Maybe this explains why breastfeeding mothers are occasionally (though rarely) arrested for indecent exposure.

Legal Lad Sotomayor hearings = snoozefest, don't you think? Whatever happened to the fireworks of yore? As Dahlia Lithwick reports, we somehow know less about Sotomayor now than at the beginning of the hearings.

Source: www.slate.com
Now that we have tweeted, dialogued, podcast, analyzed, and live-blogged these hearings into oblivion, we can finally step back ask ourselves: What have we learned? That Sonia Sotomayor's 17-year judicial record is almost completely without blemish. That s

I think that her 17 years on the bench should tell you all there is to konw about her. Asking her about her views on issues does not really make sense. Her rulings should be based on the law and the specifics of the case, which is what she alludes to.

Legal Lad How can you spot the wise Latina? She'll be speaking Latin, of course. Just two days into the Sotomayor hearings, the nominee has dazzled the crowd with stare decisis, sui generis, and pro bono. In case you're having trouble following all this, a number of papers have published legalese glossaries for non-lawyers.
