Quite recently, many of the firms at which we work have begun to hire a new type of professional -- the business manager. These professionals are assigned to help practice group leade...rs manage their practice groups. The rise of business managers presents new challenges and new opportunities. How can law firm marketers work best with these business managers to add value to everyone's job and to help their firms succeed?

On September 15, our Chapter is running a program that will focus on the role of practice management staff and their relationship to marketing and business development personnel. As law firms hire more practice management professionals, legal marketers will be in a position to help ensure that each department complements the other to form a successful team.

Through a group of panelists, attendees will learn:

* Who are practice management personnel and what do they do?
* How do the responsibilities of these business managers overlap with marketing/business development staff?
* What does the practice management career path look like?
* What is a partner's perspective on working with marketing and practice management staff?
* What are some effective ways for marketers and practice managers to work together?

Speakers at the program will be:

* Mary Connolly, Business Manager, Administrative Law Group, Hunton & Williams LLP
* Marion Baker, Intellectual Property Department Operating Officer, Foley & Lardner LLP
* Robert Lipstein, Partner and Co-Chair of the Antitrust Group, Crowell & Moring LLP
* Carla Landry, Consultant, Hildebrandt International

Everyone is talking about legal news blogs these days, but no one seems to know precisely how to deal with them. On July 21, the Capital Chapter is bringing together the leaders of th...ree well-known blogs for a panel discussion that will be moderated by two D.C. legal PR professionals.

In "You Can't Live with Them, You Can't Live Without Them: Legal News Blogs and How They're Changing Legal News Coverage," we will present Mark Bisnow of Legal Bisnow, Elizabeth Engdahl of the BLT (Blog of Legal Times), and Elie Mystal of Above the Law in a candid discussion of the legal blogging community. This dynamic panel will share their insights on how you can best work with bloggers and how you can make blogs work for you.

You will learn:

* How to establish a good working relationship with bloggers;
* What editorial policies do bloggers abide by – traditional journalism or otherwise;
* Effective ways of managing the blogging “news cycle”;
* Things to consider in developing internal blogging policies;
* When and how do you respond to a blog hit - when to use a blog to your advantage; and
* How to help management understand the nature of the blogosphere.
* The program will be moderated by Eleanor Kerlow, Senior Public Relations Manager, Hunton & Williams LLP, and Kathryn Holmes Johnson, Senior Regional Marketing Manager, Nixon Peabody LLP.

The economic downturn is creating many challenges for law firm marketers but it is also presenting opportunities. Join us for an interactive forum to discuss:

* How to adjust your business development strategies to the current economic climate
* What are the current issues of most concern to in-house lawyers
* How to help your lawyers find business development success in this climate
* How to help your firm find new opportunities in the midst of economic challenges

Presenters:

Mary K. Young, Zeughauser Group

Her experience spans the disciplines of strategic planning, marketing planning, and branding. Since she joined Zeughauser Group in 2006, leading law firms have come to rely on her skills as a strategist who can craft a powerful branding program that resonates among law firm clients.

Mary K established her reputation as a legal marketing innovator during her tenure as CMO of Howrey LLP from 2000-2006. She was instrumental in the firm’s strategic planning initiatives and the integration of a major merger partner. Between 2001 and 2004, as Howrey extended its footprint to London, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Paris, Mary K developed and implemented the marketing plans for each of those offices.
