Before real life ghost investigating became popular, in other words before Cable TV channels discovered they could make a profit off of it, ghost hunting used to be what happened after you and your friends got bored of playing Vampire the Masquerade and went to the local cemetery, afterwards discussing at White Castle how scared you had gotten. Now anyone who can afford to have their own t-shirts made is a professional investigator, hoping for their five minutes of fame on the local news.

That is a very good book, and I believe it was published in the 1960s... There's another one by Charles Neely called " Tales and Songs of Southern Illinois: Timeless Folklore in Story and Verse" which is pretty much the same book only the stories are told in first person.

by the way, "Legends and Lore of Southern Illinois" is a good read also, though out of print (1940's?) and rather expensive

I've had a site with ghost folklore for 10 years or so, and started with Illinois. You're right - at some point everybody decided they were a "parapsychologist" and it totally lost its charm for me. I haven't updated in 2 years or so, though I have to say it was really fun hearing all the stories people sent me.
