Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture Interesting perspectives presented in this new
white paper by .....Bradford at the post carbon institute... Here is just a piece of info from the paper:

The 2.6 acres of U.S. farmland have lost
50% of the carbon in the soil since 1907, the equivalent CO2 of burning
90 barrels of oil – on top of your normal carbon emissions.

It's the second report in this list: http://postcarbon.webvanta.com/new-site-files/Reports/

R. Eugene Turner has researched the science of the oxygen-deprived “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico every year since 1985. He will share his findings at this lecture, “Mississippi River Water Quality: Policy, Farm Landscapes and Hypoxia.”

Turner is a member of the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium that takes me...asurements throughout the Gulf to determine the size of the “dead zone,” the region that does not have enough oxygen to support aquatic life. It is believed that the growth of this zone is fueled by nitrogen and phosphorus runoff from agricultural activity in the Mississippi River watershed. The extra nutrients simulate excessive algae growth that decomposes and consumes most of the life-giving oxygen supply in the water.

The public also is invited to meet Turner during a reception prior to the lecture at 7 p.m.
